The Outlast Trials is a unique cooperative horror game with a lot of potential, but it's one of those early access games that's unpolished and lacking content.

The Outlast Trials is going to take the multiplayer horror genre by storm, with a game that’s just as truly terrifying with friends as it is alone.

Despite its focus on co-op, The Outlast Trials presents a strong early showing through its early access release. It runs well, has an interesting setting and story, and the co-op can be incredibly fun if you play it with the right group. The only downside is that jump scares might not be everyone's cup of tea.

The Outlast Trials is possibly the most deranged the series has ever been, with plenty of smart ideas albeit quite sparse on content.

The Outlast Trials is excessive and frantically enjoyable - but can occasionally tip over into frustration more than fear.

The Game as a Service formula of The Outlast Trials is challenging and punishing, but also functional and fun. Each element integrates perfectly into what is a game formula so distant from the saga's origins, but at the same time so functional.

If you seek a gaming experience that encapsulates the anxiety and dread reminiscent of a horror movie, where you find yourself as nothing more than helpless prey awaiting capture, then The Outlast Trials is the perfect fit for you.

It may not be the next single player terror fans of its predecessors are looking for, but The Outlast Trials successfully translates the series' formula for a co-op setting. Hiding from gory psychopaths and utilising night vision is still the name of the game - now you simply do it alongside up to three friends online. Though silly enemy AI and some repetitive visual assets drag the experience down, The Outlast Trials is an example of a former single player game turned online title done right.

The Outlasts Trials manages to reinvent itself with this new entry and not only does it not do it well, but it also ensures that the main essence of the saga does not decline and suffer comparisons. We have a multiplayer horror game that keeps the player on edge as he plays with friends, goes through key moments and sees him cooperate and become friends with our companions. This is a multiplayer mode that is not so easy to engage with, so the game will be enhanced by the fact that the experience is best played in company.

The Outlast Trials is first and foremost an excellent stealth game in which you have to avoid enemies by hiding in the shade, under the bed or inside a closet, taking care not to make noise. After that, it's an extremely brutal survival horror, in which we have to carry out heinous acts without becoming victims of psychopathic madmen ready to tear us apart in the most gory ways. The atmosphere of the Cold War prison camps with no way out has been recreated to perfection, and it's easy to empathize with the protagonist as he tries to survive, accompanied only by the mad beat of his own heart. Co-op multiplayer with three other friends completes the offering.

As a player, a lot of what’s on the table with The Outlast Trials ain’t for me. The prospect of time investment for a survival horror-style game combined with the Fortnite-style game loop makes my brain hurt. But I understand why it works for the folks who are down, and looking at those sickos having a great time in the Early Access version is a vicarious sort of fun you can have from the critic’s position. I don’t enjoy it, but I “get” it, and being able to see the enjoyment elsewhere helps wrap my head around the game holistically and fill in the blanks. I open this window into my brain for y’all to help explain why a game I won’t be picking back up again still gets a good score!

The Outlast Trials is a unique, engaging, horrifying, and memorable multiplayer experience, and although this is its greatest strength, it also lessens the pure horror experience that Outlast is otherwise known for. The excellent environments and narrative choices are well worth experiencing; I only wish there was more story content to experience, and variety in mission structure.

The Outlast Trials delivers a scary uncertainty with immersive gameplay that harkens back to the first Outlast game. This is a fun title that has a good amount of difficulty to it, where you can play it solo and still have fun even though this is mainly a co-oping experience.

At times, it does feel like Outlast Trials is trying too hard to be shocking. It soon becomes less frightening and more silly. The sadistic mutants become predictable but this doesn't detract from the fun of it all. When playing with a team you get a unique experience I haven't had with other multiplayer horror games.

The Outlast Trials is a cool idea, a spin-off that funnels players through a gauntlet of twisted levels with a gameshow/Saw movie vibe. However, as good as it all looks and sounds, with plenty of levels and tons of customisation to dig into, the core gameplay here is just way too bland and repetitive, it's in no way scary, and the only real fun to be had is in getting a bunch of pals together to laugh at your misfortunes and all of the violence that ensues.

The Outlast Trials is a fun, but flawed addition to the Outlast series, trading in the original titles’ claustrophobic horror for in-your-face multiplayer mayhem. The title’s core gameplay loop offers a thrilling challenge and high replayability, delivering plenty of trials for fans to sink their teeth into across its Core, Advanced, and Ultra Programs, with immersive audio-visual elements that deliver on all fronts. Unfortunately, The Outlast Trials' balancing issues, unjustified gratuity, and complete lack of scares may leave some players disappointed. Fans of the Outlast series will likely find plenty of reasons to explore and overcome the Murkoff Corporation’s various testing facilities, as the title offers enough challenge to keep them engaged. However, for general horror audiences, and those new to Outlast, The Outlast Trials may struggle to live up to the legendary reputation of the series’ original entries.

It's one of the most extreme and hardcore multiplayer experiences we've ever had, but at the same time catching its madness and overcoming its challenges is very, very satisfying. It's not for the faint of heart, of course.

The Outlast Trials is not the Outlast 3 that many fans of the saga not only expect but crave very strongly, but this does not mean that it is not a game to miss, especially for those who have played the first two titles. As it is a prequel, the newcomers will not feel excluded from the story either, so at the hooking level, everything closes.
