Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a typical Assassin’s Creed game, blending familiar storytelling with moments of entertaining gameplay and some tedious parts. It will please fans who wanted a return to the series' roots, especially with its €50 launch price. However, it also shows that the franchise might benefit more from looking toward the future.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage achieved what it wanted: to appeal to the nostalgia of the first title in the franchise. Linearity, focus on stealth, a more closed map and a shorter campaign, all refer to the first game. However, just like back in 2007, it lacked more care and polish. The experience will certainly please those who miss the old vibe of the franchise, but it may not be a very memorable experience.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage returns the series to its roots with enormous success. Basim’s well-paced journey from street thief to master assassin is full of stealth-focused action and enthralling investigations, and should please fans of the series with its intrigue and heart.

Assassin's Creed Mirage finally seems to have brought the series back to its roots and does so in the best way possible. The story and gameplay are indeed very similar to what made Assassin's Creed so popular when it arrived back in 2007 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, and the new setting and gameplay mechanics clearly focused on pure stealth, although some might turn their noses up at the drastic reduction of RPG elements, work, entertain and convince. In short, Mirage, if like us you loved the first chapters in the saga of first Altair and then Ezio, represents a new direction that is definitely worth experiencing.

It's like meeting an old friend again after years. You know and acknowledge his quirks, but at the same time you enjoy his company.

With its mix of classic and modern gameplay elements and a story that will take players to the birthplace of the modern Assassin Order, Assassin's Creed Mirage looks to be a fitting tribute for the series' 15th anniversary, and in a particularly fitting way to the saga. After all, this is a completely new game that draws on the genetic memory of its distant ancestors. So metaphysical.

During a time when depictions that honor the history and majesty of the Middle East are more important than ever, this window into that ancient world provides enlightenment to some players and critical representation to others. By forcing players to have patience and rewarding their creativity, Assassin's Creed Mirage in turn is making sure that every aspect of this masterpiece is seen and savored.

Assassin's Creed Mirage turns out to be a very welcome return to its roots. It suffers, however, from more than obvious technical problems. It is not so much a matter of bugs, since in this respect the title also performs well, but an overall care that is really too sloppy. For example, the good weapon feedback that Valhalla presented is completely gone in Mirage. The animations are then worse than in a great many other titles from Ubisoft itself. If we then add a cute storyline but nothing more the result is a barely decent title. We therefore recommend giving the title a try to die-hard fans of the saga; however, we cannot say that we were completely satisfied with Basim's adventures.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage brings back the feel of a classic Assassin’s Creed game thanks to its more focussed gameplay experience and the way the game plays out narratively. The returned focus of stealth based gameplay let’s you embody the mind of an assassin and the varied mission types allow you to put all of your skills to the test and achieve the outcome in the way you best see fit.

With some buggy hiccups, Assassin's Creed: Mirage offers a tightly packed experience with a good story.

On one hand, the game is tight, focused and has that unmistakable classic feel people asked for after Valhalla. On the other, it feels derivative and stuck in the past.

Assassin's Creed: Mirage serves as a heartfelt tribute to devoted fans of the franchise, evoking the nostalgia of the earlier, arguably superior days of Assassin's Creed.

Despite its problems, Assassin’s Creed Mirage genuinely feels like a love letter to the games in the series that kickstarted its legacy.

Assassin's Creed Mirage shows such a glaring lack of ambition that it's almost hurtful. It doesn't excel in anything beyond its setting, leaving us with a lackluster adventure that feels like a chore to play. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than a die-hard fan of the franchise.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is here to embrace both hardcore fans and newcomers to the series. If you're attracted to living worlds with their own dynamics in video games, I can recommend a visit to Baghdad. With the stealth-oriented gameplay we miss, the twists and turns of the story and the weight of the characters, Mirage is a game that both winks at old games and opens the door to new ones.

A built-in codex features a treasure trove of historical research, all of which has fed into this version’s immaculate creation and, while its various systemic changes will annoy some, there’s no denying that its representation of historical Baghdad is a joy to explore.

Assassins Creed has taken many forms to date, but this has been my favourite, a return to its roots while taking many of its adaptions and changing the title for the better.

Basim's story, while disappointing in some aspects, has a nostalgic bittersweet taste to the true veterans of the Hidden Ones order, as Assassin’s Creed Mirage represents a sort of homecoming by picking the Middle East as the stage for an adventure in which a clean and silent execution will always be the best way. Full of issues? Absolutely. Objectively limited, a product that is always shadowed by the expansiveness of its direct predecessors, [which are] more robust and concise? Safely. Pleasantly fun? There's no doubt about it.
