As a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes gets a lot right. It's just a shame its story lacks emotional impact and in some ways it's a little too old-fashioned.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes has the nostalgic feel of a '90s JRPG but revitalizes the genre with lovable characters and epic strategy sequences.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes perfectly captures everything it set out to achieve. While the “love letter to JRPGs” phrase gets thrown around a lot these days, and sometimes makes me cringe despite my adoration for the genre, I have to hand it to Rabbit & Bear Studios. They made a promise and delivered with in amazing ways I never thought possible – Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a love letter to classic JRPGs.

On its own, Eiyuden Chronicle is a very successful game, a throwback to the golden age of the genre. However, it is a great risk for both players and itself that it does not offer anything new by swimming in completely guaranteed waters. Especially when you consider that Suikoden I & II HD Remaster is coming out soon.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a slick and satisfying spiritual successor that gives Suikoden fans a great big dreamy treat whilst updating, modernising and streamlining its most retro aspects into a brand-new and exciting adventure for newcomers. With a timely tale to tell, excellent battle systems, an amazing cast of characters and plenty of experimentation and puzzling in its dungeons, this is a big win for Game Pass, and a fine farewell for one of the industry's true greats. Now, isn't that a lovely thing.

Were I not reviewing the game I would have put it aside after a few hours and never thought about it again. Eiyuden Chronicle comes after scores and scores of excellent and successful turn-based RPGs from which it could draw inspiration. Instead, it neglects so many of the lessons learned throughout the years in favor of outdated, tedious gameplay.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is an incredibly enjoyable RPG and it brought back great memories of the Suikoden series. Collecting the heroes and having them join you in battle while you build your base and protect the land is just as fun as it was decades ago. 🏰

Eiyuden Chronicle had potential. Unfortunately, the execution does not follow up to the hype.

Eiyuden Chronicles is the spiritual successor to the Suikoden series, and a heartbreaking farewell to Yoshitaka Murayama, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. As such, it's a bittersweet experience: one that thrills and excites, only to remind us that we'll never see something like it again.

Part of what I love so much about Hundred Heroes is the story and its cast of characters. Combat excels well enough in its simplicity, even if I wish it had a bit more going on to take advantage of that turn order. While Suikoden was never a series that I gave notice to or engaged with, apart from Tierkreis, I can see why so many people adore it and why having its creator back and producing such an experience can mean so much to so many people.

I had high hope for Eiyuden Chronicle ever since its Kickstarter in 2020. And yes, while the game genuinely feels like a love letter to both JRPG fans, and especially fans of the Suikoden franchise, it was not designed for the Nintendo Switch, and it shows. The various performance drops and long loading screens keep it from being the perfect experience, leaving me probably recommending that you do not get it on the Nintendo Switch.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is to all intents and purposes the spiritual heir to the Suikoden series. The Rabbit & Bear studio has created a game that, thanks to its passion, manages to please those who are nostalgic for Konami's JRPG series, while leaving a few perplexities for those who are unfamiliar with it.

For fans of JRPGs, it’s unmissable, and features all the typical tropes: turn-based combat, minigames, emotional beats, and fishing (obviously). It encourages you to take your time, explore every corner, and rewards you with something new continuously.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes offers a nostalgic journey back to the golden days of JRPGs with an epic story and over a hundred intriguing characters, though its turn-based combat and random encounters may feel dated to some players.

I may be biased, but Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is practically perfect. The story is wonderfully absurd whilst being emotive and interesting. The volume of recruitable heroes is impressive and levelling them to a useful standard isn’t too challenging. Alongside this, I loved the blend of tactics and the minions and bosses you face. If you then consider the excellent base building and the mini-games, there is plenty to keep you busy. Accordingly, this is a superb JRPG and I recommend buying it here! Can you become a hero? Gather your party, hone your skills, and right the wrongs.
