Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Reviews
The fighting genre has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years. You could argue that it’s currently the strongest it’s been, but the re-release of these games in such an impressive package goes to show that Capcom were amongst the early architects that helped what came to follow. Simply put, MvC: Arcade Classics is an excellent collection that celebrates the early days of the mash up madness of Street Fighter, Marvel and co. It’s to be hoped that part II of this collection, scheduled for later in 2025, continues with the quality-of-life improvements and quality seen throughout this edition.
The Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection is a must not only for fans of the cross over fighting games, but for any fighting game and Marvel fans. If you can overlook the fairly glaring omissions, there’s still a great collection of classic arcade games with neat unlockables and fun achievements. Glaring omissions you say? Well yeah, as great as this collection is, there are two fairly baffling decisions that have been made that hurt the games online lifespan and cause a fairly significant inconvenience to the user.
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Fighting Collection Arcade Classics is a great opportunity to play the classics that inspired many current fighting games. Due to its unbalanced difficulty and lack of support for new players, I cannot recommend it to anyone who wants to get to know the series, but it is perhaps a way to relive something that was already experienced in childhood in the form of nostalgia. For those who are curious, it might be better to play the most recent titles like Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

If you’re looking for a version of these classic Marvel fighting games to whip out during a party of 20-30-somethings who would know about these games, this is a great port you should look into. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is genuinely great if you value the history of 2D fighters, and I’m really happy I have a chance to play Marvel vs. Capcom 2 again. I always beat myself up for missing out on the HD remaster way back in the day, so having this game accessible is a treat. This collection for me is just a way to get MVC2 back in its arcade-accurate glory, but I’m glad it pushed me towards several other fascinating additions to Capcom’s fighting game lineage.
Amidst the increasingly present debate in the video game industry about the need and importance of preserving games, the collection MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics hits the nail on the head, bringing to current consoles the classic crossovers that were popular at the time. The presentation of the title itself (menus and themes), however, could have been more polished. It's a simple hub that gives you access to the seven games present and nothing more, very different from the care that was put on Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. In any case, just the mere existence of this nostalgic collection — something unthinkable until recently — is something to celebrate, whether you like fighting games or not.

Despite minor issues like glitches in Marvel vs Capcom 2, Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is a must-have for fighting game fans, especially if you grew up playing in arcades or are a big fan of the Versus series. The collection also serves as an excellent gateway for new players to understand the foundation of several modern titles, like the origins of extremely popular mechanics such as air combos and double jumps that originated in the Versus series, making the title an excellent "time machine" that respects the legacy of the entire franchise and has the potential to catapult the franchise to new heights.

I would like to thank Capcom for this collection of fighting games. It gave me the opportunity to catch up on some real gems from the past. The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is certainly not for every video game fan. The fact that beginners are not taken by the hand at all is also not aimed at casuals. Nevertheless, this collection is worth every penny and a must-have for fighting game enthusiasts. Especially as the offline mode is really extensive and it will take some time to master every title and character included.

The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection brings together seven iconic titles that shaped the fighting and beat 'em up genres. From X-Men: Children of the Atom to Marvel vs. Capcom 2, each game offers a unique gameplay experience, along with pixel-perfect arcade graphics and catchy soundtracks that will keep you coming back for more.
For this review, I played the collection on the Switch and the game ran smoothly, with no frame rate drops or any visible problems. This is a fully functioning port of a series of classic games that runs as it should as soon as you fire it up.
A sublime collection of great fighting game classics (and more) dusted off in their best, arcade version. 7 historical titles from the 1990s that will make fans of comics and fighting games rejoice as they await new iterations of the franchise.
