The Smurfs - Dreams does almost everything right when it comes to delivering a solid, enjoyable, and creative platformer. With a wide variety of ideas, some lovely art design, and a gorgeously soothing soundtrack, only its short length and disappointing handheld picture quality prevent it from being considered one of the very best platformers on the Switch. Given its relatively affordable price, it really is worth a look for platforming fans of all ages.

The Smurfs: Dreams is surprisingly fun and beautiful-looking. This is the best outcome for an IP that is traditionally used as shovelware fodder. It is disappointing that the core gameplay is overly safe and derivative, but the young target audience won’t know that. The lack of effort for the narrative and characters makes it hard for anyone to care about The Smurfs as a concept, but the trade-off is imaginative and wild levels.

The Smurfs - Dreams was a downright magical experience; although I did encounter a few things I wish had been different, they are instantly forgotten thanks to everything I loved about the game.

The Smurfs: Dreams is a perfect game for the little ones, but one that doesn't disdain entertaining those with a few years on their shoulders and looking for a relaxing and laid-back adventure. Gargamel is warned: trapping the Smurfs in a seemingly endless sleep was not a good idea, because anything can happen in dreams...

The Smurfs: Dreams is a functioning platformer, but never quite taps into enough of that magic to bring us an interesting experience to the namesake. They may be pretty, but these lands feel a bit vacant of charm and personality.

The biggest surprise? I’m actually recommending a game about Smurfs. Whether you love or loathe the IP, there’s no denying The Smurfs – Dreams is a solid 3D platformer. While it borrows heavily from other games, there’s enough originality to make it worth checking out, especially for collectable platforming fans. The co-op mode adds to the appeal, making it a great option for playing with someone else. If you love platformers, I honestly recommend giving this a try, even if you’re not a Smurfs fan. I’m as surprised as anyone to say that! Still not convinced? Check out the free demo on the eShop.

Levels are a bit too long, and the platforming could have been a bit better, but all in all, The Smurfs: Dreams is a pleasant surprise. With great visuals, a spectacular orchestrated soundtrack, and quite a lot of content, I simply wasn’t expecting to like this little guy as much as I did. In a console full of platforming juggernauts such as the Switch, it might be hard to justify purchasing it if you’re not exactly a fan of the Smurfs franchise, but I’d still recommend it to any platforming fan.
