Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (2025) Reviews
Even with its retro baggage, Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is an undeniably great game that fleshes out the original's formula very well and in some unexpected ways to boot. 👹
Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Remaster is not a modern action extravaganza, nor does it aspire to be one. It is an atmospheric relic from another era that scores points with its charm, atmosphere, and a combat system that remains solid even today. The technical improvements are minimal, but sufficient to make the game accessible to a new audience. Those familiar with the original will find a more comfortable version for current platforms here. Those who missed it will get a piece of Capcom history for a fair price, which may have its rough edges but is still entertaining.

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny feels stuck between 2025 and 2002. Not quite enough of the past to be pure nostalgia, and not enough of the present to feel fresh.
Onimusha 2 Remaster stays true to the original’s distinct feel and atmosphere, while smartly introducing a handful of meaningful quality-of-life improvements—such as autosave, analog movement, and real-time weapon switching—that make revisiting this classic a more seamless experience. Packed with over 100 pieces of concept art, new difficulty options, and mini-games, the remaster offers both strong archival value and a sense of completeness. What truly sets Onimusha 2 apart, however, is its bold departure from the linear action structure of its predecessor. While retaining the signature Issen counter-attack system, it introduces branching narratives shaped by relationships with companions, player-driven choices, and a cast of strikingly unique characters. Even back in its original release, this was a bold experiment—and in hindsight, it stands as a singular entry within the series, one that dared to be different before the franchise shifted toward more straightforward action. This remaster doesn’t just preserve that memory—it reaffirms that the game’s spirit of experimentation remains relevant even in today’s gaming landscape.

Is Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny a good game? Yes, absolutely. It was back in the early 2000s, it is in 2025. Is it outdated? Yes. It takes a of time to adapt to the archaic mechanics such as the combat, camera angles/changes and the lack of guidance and hand-holding, but if you’ve never played it and looking for a challenging action game, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is for you considering you can tolerate the “outdated-ness” of it. If you’ve enjoyed back in the day, it’ll fit like an old glove. There are worst ways to spend money
Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (Remaster) is an obvious improvement on the original title that makes it accessible in today's era, both in terms of gameplay and availability on modern platforms

Loved the original? Strap in – this one pulls no punches. New to the game? Forget radar, maps, quick-saves, or glowing breadcrumbs. You're flying blind, rookie. It’s raw, brutal, and unforgiving. Suck it up... or tap out.

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny fits an interesting place in gaming history. There’s a weightiness to the visuals and combat that place it more in the past, but the new life given from the analog controls cannot be understated. What results is a comedically charming story that is coupled with methodical action combat.
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is a fairly by-the-numbers remaster that offers us the best version of the game, despite some opportunities to improve upon what was already there. A completely new take on the voice acting would have done wonders, a la Persona 3 Remake, as well as improved character models wouldn’t have hurt as well. Still, the game that is here is still a really enjoyable entry in the series, and a reminder of some of the best Capcom has almost left behind.
Only for historians or masochists. Modern players will find its flaws far outweigh its nostalgic charm.

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny arrives on the Nintendo Switch as a remaster that honors its legacy while delivering a solid experience. While it still carries some of the visual limitations of its time and occasionally stumbles with static camera issues, the game remains fun, stylish, and full of personality. Capcom has skillfully balanced nostalgia and accessibility, offering a title that still feels relevant—whether you’re revisiting the PS2 era or discovering the franchise for the first time. The dark atmosphere, dynamic combat, and Jubei’s personal journey make this adventure well worth rediscovering. If you enjoy hack-and-slash games with a strong dose of historical and supernatural ambiance, this reimagined classic has everything it needs to earn your time and perhaps even your samurai heart.

At the end of the day, even if it hasn’t aged as well as expected, being able to play Onimusha 2 on modern consoles is still one hell of a treat. Just know what to expect before grabbing a copy. Get ready for some uninteresting cutscenes and dated controls, but stay for the amazing combat, music, and overall setting. As an appetizer before the release of the actual new Onimusha game coming out next year, as well as the stepping stone for a possible remaster of the third entry in the franchise (as in, the best one), Onimusha 2 gets the job done, without a doubt.
The remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny brings original PS2 game to modern standards with improved graphics and controls. It doesn't re-invent the game, but instead ensures it's kept alive for future generations. This remaster won't win over many new gamers, but will be welcomed of fans of the series. In a way, this is what remasters are meant to do: preserve and future-proof what otherwise might have been lost forever.

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is a very faithful recreation of the PS2 classic, but given an updated lick of paint and modern quality of life improvements. At times, that adaptation comes with frustrations, but for me it also comes with a wealth of nostalgia and doses of joy. If you loved it before or what Capcom did with Onimusha Warlords, you’re going to feel right at home here, but newcomers to the series or those who struggle with classic tank setups and jarring camera angles may not be quite so forgiving or find this a particularly convincing reason to get excited about Way of the Sword. That music, though..
Despite some dated elements, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is a faithful and thoughtfully enhanced return to a PS2-era classic. It may not win over everyone, but for fans of the original – or newcomers curious about a piece of the series’ history ahead of the upcoming release of its newest entry – it’s a compelling and enjoyable action-adventure that stands up better than expected.
