Dune: Awakening succeeds by marrying intense survival systems with the grand scale of political intrigue and metaphysical mystery. It offers not just a game to be played but a very world to be lived in. A world where every drop of water matters and every decision echoes across the dunes.
Dune: Awakening heavily relies on its well-known universe, offering very average, sometimes outright boring gameplay mechanics. If you’re not a fan of Frank Herbert’s world, you won’t find a captivating story here. Instead, you’ll get hours of traversing a monotonous desert while engaging in equally monotonous resource gathering, with resources constantly respawning in the same spots. Unfortunately, in Funcom’s production, I found nothing that would make me want to spend more time with it, so I cannot recommend it.

Dune: Awakening is an outstanding survival game during its early and mid-game, with a carefully crafted setting, enjoyable movement system, and a very satisfying solo experience. Its downfall lies in the endgame, with an empty Deep Desert, broken and soulless PvP, and a lack of meaningful cooperative content. Even so, it has a solid foundation and real potential — if Funcom manages to refocus the design into a more complete and balanced experience. A strong start with an endgame that still needs work.

Dune: Awakening is a very unique game that is unyielding in its intention to deliver on a very specific vision. The world is opressive, the systems are obtuse and the universe is extremely interesting, all things that made my time in Arrakis an unforgettable, if brutal, experience.

There’s a lot of potential in here, and if you were a fan of Conan: Exiles‘ grindy loop, you’ll have a blast with Dune: Awakening, considering it’s a tad bit more forgiving than its predecessor. Oddly enough, however, the more you’re a fan of the Dune books, the more off-putting Awakening will become, considering its bizarre fanfic-y premise and ideas that just go against everything the books (and even the most recent movies) have been saying for the past half-decade. As a result, Dune: Awakening, whilst easily the best Dune game since the strategy titles from the early 90s, is more appealing to those just seeking for a new survival MMO, and not exactly die-hard fans of the seminal sci-fi franchise.
