A gorgeous remake of a classic JRPG that many players missed out on, this version of Dragon Quest VII swings hard towards accessibility (and might actually overshoot the mark a little bit). Visually gorgeous, with a fun episodic structure, this is a great way for fans to revisit this story or encounter it for the first time. My only caveat is a warning to be very careful with the "Quality of Life" settings, which make it entirely too easy to break the game, removing all of the challenge (and therefore all of the fun).

While the mechanical redundancies and mid-game pacing hurdles keep it just shy of perfection, DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is a triumph of art direction and quality-of-life design. The bottom line: this is the Definitive way to play DRAGON QUEST VII, just don't be surprised if some things have changed since the last time you set foot in Eden!

With its reworked graphics and battle systems, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is the definitive way to play the beloved JRPG, though some of its mechanics aren't as revolutionary as they once were.

And ultimately, after dozens of hours spent among islands, eras, and rewritten destinies, it's hard not to acknowledge one fundamental merit: having done justice to a title often remembered more for its size than its value. Here, finally, Dragon Quest VII can be played, appreciated, and loved for what it has always been.

At the end of the day, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a great experience. HexaDrive has delivered a remake that all fans of the genre and the series can enjoy. Some of the changes make the title more enjoyable, with better pacing and a structure that gets straight to the point. However, it's also true that some of these decisions remove some of the identity of Dragon Quest VII . Interestingly, those entering this world for the first time might not even notice.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined wants to have its cake and eat it too, but ends up feeling incredibly bland in most aspects. It's still a Dragon Quest game and is fun to a point, but in sanding off the edges of the original game it loses the charm of a time traveling adventure and becomes a rote, forgettable RPG checklist of a game.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined succeeds at streamlining a lengthy adventure at the expense of player discovery and friction, leading to a version that feels like Diet Dragon Quest VII.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a well-done remake of the classic JRPG. The fantastical journey through time to save magical islands may seem a bit naive, but that's not a bad thing if you ask me. The new version boasts stunning graphics, full voice acting, and numerous improvements – although players who hate grind will find plenty of it here.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is the best way to play one of the most unique entries in this franchise. Many of its shortcomings won't be felt by first timers, and its countless improvements make it all too easy to revisit this adventure. It's still an unbelievably huge JRPG, but one that retains its unrivalled sense of cosiness and charm.

It’s wonderful to play Dragon Quest VII Reimagined today, knowing the importance of the original in JRPG history more than 25 years ago. It also does exactly what it says on the tin; this is a reimagining of the original, removing some parts entirely and vastly improving its pacing and story flow. Its combat is still as fun as ever, with dual vocations allowing for more experimentation, and the puppet and diorama art style pops. Purists may struggle with or question some of the bolder changes here, but this version feels like a solid entry point and is far easier to recommend than its clunky, long-winded original, even if it may feel just a little bit less epic.

Whether it will bring on those who couldn't get through the original or not, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a finely honed role-playing game and a fitting retake on a divisive classic.

Seeing the team this willing to flip the script on the traditional formula leaves me very excited for the future of the franchise; if other remakes (or the distant future release of Dragon Quest 12) can take lessons from Reimagined’s mechanics or art style, I’ll be a very happy gamer indeed.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is not a 1:1 remake of the PlayStation classic, but a reimagined retooling of a long and winding adventure, one that mostly sticks the landing.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined retains the core components of the PlayStation title — an emotionally powerful narrative, a diverse set of role-playing scenarios, and a tactically rewarding vocation system — and enhances them with gorgeous visuals, immersive voice-acting, several important quality-of-life features, and superior pacing.
