Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is without a doubt the best version of this classic JRPG. The diorama graphics look phenomenal, the new features save you time without losing out on the game's identity, and the Switch 2 makes everything run smoothly. Some completionists might not like how much content was cut, but these changes turn a hard-to-finish epic into an adventure new players can actually complete. If you gave up on the PS1 or 3DS versions, Reimagined clears almost every obstacle between you and one of the series' best stories.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is remarkably hard to fault, to the point where it feels like a blueprint for what a modern Dragon Quest should be. The story has been significantly streamlined, with many narrative beats rewritten more coherently, allowing an already solid tale to feel refreshed. Meanwhile, its combat and world exploration benefit from extensive quality-of-life improvements, adding a wealth of convenient features that make the overall experience notably comfortable to play.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is probably the boldest of the three remakes released by Square Enix over the past couple of years: not only because the original title had already received an excellent remaster on 3DS, but also because the changes introduced here are less trivial and arguably more targeted than those the Erdrick trilogy actually required.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a charming reimagining that trades challenge for a lot of polish and accessibility.

It makes no sense why this is called “Reimagined” when most of the time it cuts content. They should have called this “Dragon Quest VII Abridged and Easier“, because that’s what it is. There is still some enjoyment to be had; it is still a Dragon Quest game afterall, but losing so much content for the sake of better graphics doesn’t seem worth it.

The reimagined version offers a brand-new experience by providing a fresh, more modern perspective on the classic DQ7 rather than trying to replace it, and it positions itself among the series’ successful entries. I just wish the overly easy difficulty had been tuned a bit higher and the missing content had been included as well.

More to the point, no RPG trading on nostalgia – port, remake, or entirely new game – should overlook the existing fans entirely. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined makes some very smart decisions with the narrative and gameplay, and is so very close to the perfect version of the masterpiece thanks to that, but players have to go in knowing that the challenge is essentially non-existent.

Overall, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a fantastic remake that hits all the right marks. I don't necessarily agree with all of the changes made, but they work with what the game is going for. It's an engaging, fun, and well-made Dragon Quest game that is among the best of the franchise. There's no better way to play than Reimagined, especially if you are interested in Dragon Quest VII but felt intimidated by the time commitment. Even longtime fans of the series will find new surprises and new experiences to enjoy.

While the audio and visual elements of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined are top-notch, those familiar with the depth of the original might not be entirely on board with the drastic changes. Although some are legitimate improvements, there is always a nagging feeling that there could have been a definitive Dragon Quest VII, and not just a "reimagined" iteration. Despite some misgivings from a long-time Dragon Warrior VII fan, this is still a righteous JRPG that delivers on most fronts. It’s easier than ever now, but thankfully not so easy that failure is impossible, and no one is likely to be stuck for long.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a beautifully designed turn-based RPG that is much more approachable to new players than the 3DS remake in 2016, but it may leave fans of earlier versions feeling slighted. Small changes like enemy weaknesses or immunities being highlighted in battle can make combat less challenging, so RPG veterans may want to consider a higher difficulty and avoid auto-battling entirely. I can't recall the last time I defeated a Dragon Quest final boss on the first try, but such was the case with Reimagined despite doing little grinding, and the result left me feeling deflated, rather than triumphant. Even though there aren't any glaring problems with this remake, it never felt as satisfying to play as the HD-2D games or Dragon Quest 11, so be prepared for a noticeably different experience compared to those RPGs.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a remake crafted with an immense amount of love and care. Visually, it's majestic and full of charm, the voice acting is superb, the pacing has been polished to be more fluid without sacrificing important narrative points, and the combat is amazing. We hadn't had this much fun grinding in a JRPG for a long time, and we believe that with Reimagined, Dragon Quest VII will no longer be seen as one of the black sheep of the franchise; on the contrary, it will be considered one of the best in the series.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined succeeds because it understands what made the original special while also acknowledging where it needed help. The pacing is smoother, the world is richer and the job system finally feels like the flexible, rewarding mechanic it was always meant to be. It is respectful to the source material, maintaining the old soul while and polishing the result up to the shine of a metal slime’s backside.

Dragon Quest VII is a heartfelt return to the roots of the role-playing genre. It may not push the boundaries of modern RPG design, but it delivers something just as valuable, which is warmth, nostalgia, and a genuine sense of adventure. For fans of classic RPGs, it feels like reconnecting with an old friend, and even with its easier difficulty and slower opening hours, it remains a deeply enjoyable journey that celebrates everything the Dragon Quest series has always done so well.
