Game Freak borrows liberally from the genre's biggest hits. And while its messy and muddled, it's salvaged by exhilarating combat and traversal, and a surprising amount of soul.

Mixing close-range action freneticism with a gorgeous, meditative atmosphere, Beast of Reincarnation is fun, admirable, gorgeous and flawed.

Beast of Reincarnation is an action RPG that has some great ideas blossoming here and there, but they can be hard to spot among the weeds.

Beast of Reincarnation feels like the result of Game Freak’s designers having something to say (or at least wishing they did), but constantly struggling to find the right words. It eventually becomes a very fun action RPG to play, but stumbles many, many times on the path of getting there.

Beast of Reincarnation is an engaging, highly addictive experience with a lot to explore, but it comes with some issues. For starters, the plot is as lifeless as the characters and the environmental design is seriously lacking.

Beast of Reincarnation is a fantastic ARPG that helps push Game Freak out of Pokémon’s shadow.

Ultimately, Beast of Reincarnation is sustained by its atmosphere and story . I thoroughly enjoyed it precisely for that reason... and because the combination of Sekiro-esque gameplay with a Nier-like feel is the kind of pitch that seems tailor-made for me, but I'm aware that it's a game with numerous shortcomings.

If anything, Beast of Reincarnation could be the perfect 7/10; it's a mass of systems, ideas and interesting design choices that so very nearly hang together. While there's jank, annoyances and performance issues, they don't diminish the fundamental enjoyment of the world Game Freak has created. For all the long shadow that Pokémon casts, I want to see more like Beast of Reincarnation find their way into the light.

From Pokémon dev Game Freak, Beast of Reincarnation is a parry-focused apocalyptic soulslike. Is this ambitious experiment worth your time?

Beast of Reincarnation is an intriguing detour for Pokemon developer Game Freak, but it sadly doesn't live up to expectations.

Beast of Reincarnation proves that Game Freak really knows how to make video games when given enough time. Quite a lot of time, actually-considering the first draft dates back to 2020 and it took six years to reach release. But those six years were well spent, because despite a few rough edges and stumbles, the end result is a blast to play.

With a compelling, NieR-meets-Princess Mononoke narrative, solid level design that makes the most of its linear world, and a hybrid combat system blending Sekiro-style parrying with turn-based mechanics, Beast of Reincarnation is among the most interesting action RPGs of the year. While a slow start, technical shortcomings, and other flaws may be off-putting, action game fans shouldn't be deterred from experiencing what is, overall, a very solid title.

Beast of Reincarnation is an interesting action RPG that ties together various elements to present something quite unique. While the narrative isn't particularly enthralling and it suffers from some visual and technical issues, the combat is a highlight, focusing on parries and a mix of melee and pseudo-turn-based commands that feels fun to balance. It wears its influences on its sleeve, but there are just enough fresh ideas that mean it stands apart.

I had a great time playing Beast of Reincarnation, but getting to that point was a bit of a fight. If you can manage to peel back this game’s many chitinous layers, you’ll find something lovely underneath, waiting to shine.

From its incredible soundtrack to its fantastic combat and world, Beast of Reincarnation delivers an entertaining experience. Though I wish the game's story had as much flair throughout the 30-hour experience, there is just too much to love about Game Freak's venture into a more adult-themed world.

Beast of Reincarnation is a bold new title from Game Freak that liberally takes inspiration from a handful of other games, including Pokémon, but manages to twist it all into something charmingly unique.

While no masterpiece, Beast of Reincarnation’s engaging combat and bond-based core render it an endearing debut from a storied publisher. Check it out if you’re in the market for something different.
