Etrange Overlord is fun and short, a perfect palette cleanser for those who are looking for a shorter experience.

Strange Overlord is a curious game. It excels when showcasing its comedy and musical talents, but stumbles and falters somewhat when faced with more standard gameplay.

Etrange Overlord is a fun and frantic game that that slowly builds into an adventure with a diverse cast of character and unlocks new mechanics fairly opening up for an adventure fraught with humour and fun that stands well on its own merit as an action JRPG.
It’s kind of funny to think how my experience playing Etrange Overlord was almost as dramatic as the game itself. I was frustrated by the bizarre pacing of the first half and the feeling that the game was about to end after just four hours, only to see it finally get its pacing right and deliver a gameplay that hooked me and a story that never stopped surprising me. This is a work whose imperfections are marks of its ambition. The same ambition that wanted to develop 14 characters at once, and the same that created fascinating gameplay around the concept of conveyor belt sushi, and that’s a small price to pay for creating such a memorable experience.

Etrange Overlord is an interesting idea, essentially telling a light novel villainess story through the medium of a game. However, it doesn’t really deliver its message, in part due to the short playtime, minimal story scenes, and the use of some of its time on skits and silly moments, which could’ve been better used to develop its themes. However, the humor and Étrange as a character do somewhat save it. The gameplay is also simple and lacks overall difficulty, but it is action-packed and genuinely fun for what it is. Dashing about the various level mechanics and grabbing items from the conveyor belt makes for a great time, and the levels are short enough to never overstay their welcome.
