With its time-looping mechanic, very distinctive visual style, and often amusing sense of humor this mystery title has a feel that’s quite refreshing

The Posthumous Investigation is not a game for those seeking constant action or major tests of skill. Its appeal lies in spotting connections, getting to know the characters, and discovering that a seemingly insignificant piece of information was actually the missing link. It is, quite literally, arduous detective work: gathering fragments, cross-referencing data, and stitching it all together into a vast patchwork. With a well-crafted narrative, striking art direction, a solid soundtrack, and a time-loop mechanic that works better than it might seem on paper, the game stands out thanks to its distinct personality. Its main drawbacks stem from a slower pace and occasional repetition.

A Investigação Póstuma succeeds where many literary adaptations fail: instead of merely illustrating Machado de Assis, it plays with him, using the irony, sarcasm, and fragmented structure that were the author’s hallmarks as the very engine of its game design. It is a game that demands patience and rewards those who enjoy piecing a story together bit by bit, rather than those looking to rush to the finish. For those who have already read Machado, it is a delight packed with references; for those who haven’t, it serves as the most entertaining gateway between Brazilian literature and gaming.

The Posthumous Investigation has turned out to be a breath of fresh air among this year's detective adventure games. Brilliantly written text, complex characters, and a rarely-seen setting await us, all accompanied by gorgeous black-and-white visuals and catchy jazz. The time loop, however, is a double-edged sword: at first it's exciting to figure out the suspects' schedules, but by the second half of the game it becomes monotonous, thanks to the constant repetition, the dialogue you can't skip, and the items you have to collect over and over again. The ending won't be to everyone's taste either, but still, I'd say it's worth diving into, since it's rare to come across such an original mystery even among adventure games.

The Posthumous Investigation has a compelling mystery, memorable characters, and beautiful art and music, but its repetitive time loop and constant guidance often make the investigation feel less rewarding than it should.

A Investigação Póstuma is an investigative adventure with a creative concept, a unique setting, and plenty of personality. The combination of a noir Rio de Janeiro, characters inspired by Machado de Assis, a jazz soundtrack with bossa nova influences, and a time-loop structure works well to create a distinctive experience within the Nintendo Switch library.

The Posthumous Investigation is an atmospheric noir adventure with a striking black-and-white style, a strong sense of place, well-written characters, and an intriguing time-loop mystery. Its lack of a clear resolution, weaker minigames, and a few underused locations may disappoint players expecting a classic detective payoff, but with the right mindset, its unusual approach can make the experience even more memorable.

The Posthumous Investigation is an interesting title, one that adapts incredible works of fiction into an interactive experience. While the mechanics aren’t the most inventive or interesting, and certain quality-of-life features would make the game far more enjoyable to play, you’re bound to find yourself wrapped up in the game’s fun writing and characters, fantastic art, and exciting mystery.

Posthumous Investigation doesn't just rely on paying homage to one of the great classics of Brazilian literature; beyond the retelling, it delivers a game that respects your freedom and intelligence as a player by presenting a game with little guidance and full of puzzles that only the best point-and-click games know how to do.

For those looking for a shorter, narrative driven game to dive into, I highly recommend The Posthumous Investigation. It’s an intriguing character study that keeps you guessing and makes you wonder, who truly was the culprit and why? What in the human condition made this man both so loved and hated? You’ll have to play to find out.

The Posthumous Investigation is a well-executed game that stands out in the Brazilian indie scene by bringing together qualities that are difficult to find in a single title. The narrative is engaging, the noir aesthetic is well-resolved, the soundtrack fulfills its role with personality, and the time loop mechanic offers enough depth to keep the player engaged throughout the entire campaign with a strong cultural identity and the potential to win over an audience beyond indie game fans.
