All in all, the Sega 3D Classics Collection offers a great mix of titles to suit the tastes of many.

Few games are heralded as true classics. Even fewer earn the distinction of defining a genre, or better yet, a generation. Sega 3D Classics Collection has a handful of these games gathered on a single cart. The emulators' robust feature set and extremely well implemented 3D make these games feel like much more than re-releases of old games. If you're a lifelong Nintendo fan, you owe it to yourself to see what those on the other side of the console wars enjoyed. You're in for a treat.

SEGA 3D Classics Collection is a great value package, full of worthy games that look and play wonderfully on the 3DS.

A great compilation that offers 9 awesome classics, although only 7 of them have something 'special'. Altered Beast & Thunder Blade are the low points on this compilation.

It’s a nice package, and the 3D is proof that classic titles from what I consider the golden era of gaming can pop fantastically well on the 3DS. Next time, hopefully the selection can vary more broadly, making the package both worthy of a full price tag and hours of investment instead of a burst of nostalgia and the question of why my wallet feels lighter than it should.

Some of the best emulation work ever undertaken, it’s just a pity it’s been wasted on such a miserable collection of decidedly non-classic games.

Sega 3D Classics Collection is an uneven package, but nothing outside of Altered Beast is what I would consider a "bad game." With several useful features and 3D effects that actually have effort put into them, it was a joy to play some of these for the first time, while reliving some great memories from others. Since the games that are available on 3DS already are generally priced at $6 each, nabbing 10 titles for $30 with a physical box and some extras isn't a raw deal.

Sega 3D Classics Collection is a fantastic presentation of mostly mediocre games, like a beautifully shot and directed movie featuring David Duchovny in its leading role.

For the Sega fans looking for some games to take on the go that even look pretty decent in 3D, this collection has something for everyone, although the price point may be a bit too steep when some games are short lived.

This is a tough bundle to give a solid “Yes” too because, as much as I loved most of the individual games and lost classics, I’m wondering how much I will be going back to it after writing this review. Having a legitimate Puyo Puyo game forever installed on my Nintendo 3DS is a plus, but replaying arcade games after a round or two has never been my thing.

Despite the name, there really aren't many classics included in this compilation. The historical value is rich, though, and the 3D remakes by M2 are top notch. It's just too bad that better games weren't included.

Personally though, I loved this compilation of games as it brought me back to my childhood. With beautifully done 3D effects, a solid selection of games, and a myriad of options for those games, SEGA 3D Classics Collection is a very solid purchase for fans of the classic SEGA arcade era. Now I’m just ready for SEGA 3D Classics Collection Volume 2!

Sega 3D Classics Collection is a hard release to judge. On one hand, it’s a mixed selection of M2’s fantastic library of classic Sega games reworked for the 3DS. On the other, it offers up stellar versions of every one of those games, which fans will especially appreciate.

The choice regarding which titles to include in this Sega 3D Classics Collection is very questionable, as there are great titles (Sonic, Galaxy Force II, Power Drift, Puyo Puyo 2 and Fantasy Zone II), decent ones (Thunder Blade) and almost bad ones too (Altered Beast, Maze Walker). All of them have been treated with love and respect, and the price is right: nostalgia will be a factor, in the end.

SEGA went through some real work to smooth out the music and sound for this collection. Many might not know this but the pre SEGA CD systems left much to be desired when it came to sound effects and music. With the games being rebuilt from the ground up, its nice to see that they did not only focus on the visuals but the audio as well. This helps to round out the collection, putting it far and above any emulation.

Sega 3D Classics Collection is decent collection of games made better by an earnest attempt to do something fun and unique with older games. Sega could have easily made a cynical cash grab by throwing a layer of 3D paint over everything and calling it a day, but the developers obviously put quite a bit of effort into making everything look as good as it could while also making a few worthwhile tweaks to the playability. Unfortunately, all that effort is actually let down by the selection of games.

Newcomers will have to research themselves because the game certainly offers no historical perspective, but do so and you’ll walk away gleaming appreciation for now-overlooked classics that left their mark on the industry.

If you’re a fan of classic games and want to see some of Sega’s past, I’d suggest maybe giving this release a look. It’s not a collection for everyone, though, and I’d recommend researching the games first before diving in.

SEGA 3D Classics Collection a great effort in the annals of archiving game history, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum, and anyone who's already dropped $40-50 on the bulk of the games on this cart may not be so keen to spend another $30 on three titles of wildly varying quality. Still, Maze Walker may not be much fun, but it's never looked this nice. Of course, if you haven't already picked up these games individually, there's no question — this is a must-have compilation.
