Aside from a few graphical improvements and mechanical tweaks, not much has changed. Sadly, a lack of true originality and asymmetry makes this sequel just a tad weaker than its prequel.

If you’ve been tempted to venture into the world of Real-Time Strategy at any point in your life, then Halo Wars 2 could very well be your perfect entry point into this long-running and popular genre.

Halo Wars is a comfortable and appropriate evolution of the original and is a glowing successor to the original's daring attempt at creating a real-time strategy game for consoles. A new threat, an old friend, Halo Wars 2 fits into the entire Halo franchise quite well. The biggest complaint that I have with Halo Wars 2 is less about the game and more about the franchise. Time and time again it feels that 343 Industries has strung out the franchise with a carrot-on-a-stick, and that carrot is always "another splinter faction of the Covenant is haywire, go kill them all." While fun it has gotten old, quickly, and I would love to see something truly new come out of the franchise, but until that happens, Halo Wars 2 is an excellent spinoff series for Halo fans.

The first Halo Wars was intended for Halo fans, and Halo Wars 2 is no different even with a new multiplayer modes and story. It's a fun game to try out, especially for players are afraid to play a complex RTS game which usually requires hours to learn and master, whether it is against the AI or online with real competitors. But sadly, even with its launch on PC via the Windows 10 Store, fans of the genre won't stick around given the deeper and richer experience found in other competing RTS games such as Company of Heroes, Total War or even the eternal StarCraft II.

It’s not the greatest RTS and it’s by far from the greatest Halo game, but in a world where Microsoft IPs are dropping harder and faster than bloated flies it’s just what I needed. A little MAG blast of hope to combat the monotony. For Halo fans it’s just another fix to an ongoing story; for RTS fans it’s probably on the lower scale of their expectations; and for me it’s an odd beast the bridges the gap.

Halo Wars 2 is a decent sucessor of this well known series. It can certainly entertain for many evenings, but is lacking in innovation. However, if you want to play a RTS on your console, it's definitely a good choice.

A recommended take on the RTS genre, especially for console and a big must for Halo and Halo Wars fans especially.

Overall this is the most fun I have had with an RTS in quite some time. If you are a returning RTS hound or new to the play style you could certainly do a lot worse than Halo Wars 2. It is everything I wanted, with a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure.

Halo Wars 2 is a fine RTS that sadly could not make an RTS fan out of me.

I really love Halo Wars 2. It’s not the deepest RTS, and it really is best for fans of the Halo universe. As it is available for Game Pass there is no harm in trying things solo or even better, with a friend in co-op. Add in the excellent expansion Awakening the Nightmare and you have yourself a genuinely awesome game.

On the one hand, Halo Wars 2 doesn't bring anything new to the genre. In addition, it is not a production without minor flaws. On the other hand, the atmosphere characteristic of the Halo series and a great multiplayer mode save the production and distinguish it from other strategies. If you like Spartan adventures and appreciate the online battle mode, you will definitely be satisfied with the purchase of Halo Wars 2.

Halo Wars 2 is hands-down the best RTS available on console, and a game that rightfully deserves a place in any thinking Xbox One owner’s library.

There is plenty of fun to be had, but in the end Halo Wars 2 feels like just another decent game from a popular franchise.

Halo Wars 2 is an absolute blast. Whether you're engrossed into its fantastic storyline in the battle against Atriox, playing it like a classic RTS in the Deathmatch, Domination, or Stronghold game-types, or building your deck with the new and innovative Blitz mode, there's something for everyone. Halo Wars 2 is for both newbies to RTS and Halo games, as well as seasonal veterans. As for those who love both Halo and RTS, well they have an absolute treat awaiting them, as do new players alike.

Halo Wars 2 managed to drag me in kicking and screaming, and left me coming out more intrigued about the Halo universe itself. I have never been an aficionado of the Haloverse, nor have I ever been interested in it before. Halo Wars 2 may just change that. The campaign tells a safe narrative that is made more impressive by the intimacy of the gameplay. The multiplayer Blitz mode may not be for everyone, but between it, and the rest of the multiplayer, there's enough there to keep people going for quite some time.

Halo Wars 2 is a better game thanks to the improvements of the ideas that were established by the first title. Better camera/cursor speed and the addition of custom groupings makes it feel closer to a PC RTS title while still maintaining the ease of control that console players want. The campaign and standard multiplayer modes are solid, while Blitz is a great addition for those looking for quicker RTS matches. While the game is undoubtedly better on a PC, the gameplay and presentation do well on a console — if you can overlook some of the issues mentioned earlier. Halo Wars 2 may be the only RTS game on the platform thus far, but it is a good one that's worth checking out.
