The new cast of characters is what keeps A New Frontier going, which is something Telltale should be commended for as it was a much riskier proposition than continuing the story of established characters. It just seems like The Walking Dead as a franchise doesn't have many tricks beyond "we gotta do what it takes to survive," "don't trust anyone," and "something isn't right about this place."

Above the Law is a perfectly good episode with a few great quiet moments. It just lacks the oomph that the first two episodes brought and is being dragged down by a far too large cast of characters.

Telltale have surprised me before, and for Clementine's sake, I hope they manage it again by the end of this season. Otherwise, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier may join the series with a whimper, rather than a ferocious zombie bite.

I'd rather be watching Season 3 of TWD than playing it.

Unfortunately, this episode's strengths are all in superficial places. Nobody comes to a Telltale game looking for technical prowess, and plot is only a tiny part of what makes a good story. I hate to say it, but Above the Law falls flat in the places that matter most: the characters and depth that underpin everything else. Without that, the episode is particularly forgettable, which doesn't bode well for an episodic series that's already struggling with its release schedule.

Not a great effort: Above the Law does not deliver true drama, a good progression of characters, and some serious action.

"Above the Law" suffers from "the middle episode syndrome". It calms down the thrill from previous episodes, but also afraids going straight to the action, because there is still one stop before the finale.

Despite a disappointing amount of interactivity, Above the Law manages to be the most interesting episode yet of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.

Above the Law certainly delivers where it matters most. A New Frontier's third episode continued to tell its dark overarching story, while not forgetting about its rich characters and their motives.

"Above the Law" examines what family means to each and every one of its primary players so deftly, it's hard not to be in awe of what Telltale's writers have accomplished.

Telltale took a big risk when it comes to setting players inside a fresh season of The Walking Dead with a new protagonist and different focus. And the developer has, for the most part, succeeded in providing an interesting new roster of characters but without losing The Walking Dead's strong writing and characterization. However, "Above the Law's" weakness in terms of moving the narrative forward is noticeable, especially with only two episodes left in the season. Hopefully we'll get a satisfying sense of where the season is heading before it's over.

After a good start, The Walking Dead : A New Frontier - Episode 3 slows down a bit. Even if a new character feels like a good way to make the player doubt, it just feels like we have already seen what's on the screen. And that the best part is probably coming.

Above the land is weaker than the first two episodes. The script of the game fails to make the intriguing plot evolve, letting it become too predictable.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier - Episode 3: Above the Law is simmering. Javier Garcia is a great character, and aside from some cartoonish bit-parts, the cast that he's surrounding himself with is equally intriguing. Clem's inclusion feels a little forced at this point, but it's good to have her around all the same. An unsatisfying conclusion lets this instalment down, but we're still very much enjoying the ride.

A New Frontier seemed like a gamble, but less so after a great premiere. Now this third episode has even managed to overcome Telltale's usual middle episode slump and provide some of the best, most affecting character moments the series has produced across three seasons. It now becomes a bit nerve-racking to see whether they can close out the season so highly, because if they do, this may become Telltale's crowning achievement.

A return to form for Telltale and their most notable series. A few of the usual problems still exist, but the world-building and character development is very strong. Based on this two-part season opener, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is shaping up to be an emotional, visceral ride.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - A New Frontier Episode 3: Above the Law seeks to break the vicious circle of the shock content, trying to create some semblance of a psychological series about morals and family values, but sometimes writers lack the skill to submit a story at the appropriate level.

“Above the Law” is yet another strong installment in one of the most promising seasons Telltale’s had in quite a while. While it won’t win over anyone who’s become jaded by the lack of puzzles, and the romantic arc between Kate and Javi feels more forced than ever, it’s loaded with great action scenes and one of the best new characters the franchise has seen in awhile. If you haven’t picked up this season, now’s the perfect time to do just that.
