Never have I ever played a videogame as darkly disturbing and morbid as Outlast 2. I will be having nightmares for at least a month. The gameplay is simple yet complex and relies on you being able to keep your nerve. As much as I was horrified of the sights I saw in the game, I was enthralled on how well represented the visuals were. I wanted it to end and yet I wanted more. I was terrified and confused but boy did my adrenaline spike at every chase sequence.

Outlast 2 delivers on all its promises. It's as gory as horror games come and feels like a high-budget AAA game. The permadeath "insane" difficulty speaks to experienced gamers who want a challenge. My only complaint is the abrupt ending that cries for a DLC and leaves too many mysteries unanswered. Props for including player-friendly collectible tracker — that's how it should be done!

As fun as it was to play this game, it didn’t come without a few annoying elements here and there. Darkness in the game acts as its own entity and often times will frustrate the hell out of you, but the urge to dredge on will captivate you.

"...I had to decide if I wanted to continue on for this review or come out with a DNF and go watch some cartoons to soothe my tortured soul. Seriously, Outlast 2 has some of the scariest moments you’ll find in a video game."

Everything, in Outlast II, is better than the previous chapter: the story is more deep and articulate, the levels are bigger, the enemies smarter... Well, most of all, it's even scarier. Strap in, it will be one hell of a ride.

Stealth and pursuit haven't changed much in Outlast 2, but it excels as a beautiful, brutal journey through extreme spiritual anxieties.

If you thought the original did a good job of scaring you to death, this one does it 10 times better.

While you won't feel any sympathy for an overly talkative player character, the story will intrigue you, your enemies will terrify you, and every scene will leave you awestruck with dread.

Forgiving a story that leans a bit too heavily on its forebears, Outlast 2 is an excellent horror game. It’s frightening, repulsive, and filled with the thrilling anxiety of the best games of its type. It does exactly what a sequel should. It delivers on all of the refinements and expansions you would expect to find three years from the original; and though its larger environments sometimes lead to repeated deaths, they also amplify the dread of being hunted. Outlast 2 made me uncomfortable, anxious, repulsed and frightened, and yet I couldn’t wait to see what it would deliver next. That’s a horror game done right.

The game wastes no time diving you into a blood soaked desert filled with crazy cultists and weird happenings. The main mechanics revolve around you reaching the end of the game while recording and documenting the events around you. Filling everything you can and piecing the story together. This differs slightly from the original game where recording and event can be viewed on your camera with a dialog over the event. Outlast 2 really tried to up the game of its storytelling and I like that.

Outlast 2 puts together all of its nightmares with amazing clarity and execution. It takes the best parts of the original and adds more variety through natural hiding spots, fantastic interludes, razor-sharp jump scares, intense chases, and more horrific foes. Not many horror games get everything to work this well together.

For the most part, Outlast 2 ticks all the boxes when it comes to presentation. The story may seems convoluted at first but given enough time and introspection, it can be rewarding. As of now though, the revelations are left to speculations and interpretations.

Outlast 2 offers an openness to its environment which produces a vulnerable protagonist and dangerous world in which to delve into. Exploring dark religious tones throughout this isn't one for the faint of heart.

The Switch version of Outlast 2 is not too different from the PC and console versions released last year, and that's surely something, even if some compromises have been made. Content wise, the game offers a new Story mode and not much else. At the end of the day, Outlast 2 is still a must-have for every survival horror fan out there.
