If you have a Switch, or hell, just looking for an Arcade racing experience that won't try to shove microtransactions down your throat, or artificially gate your progress with unnecessary bullsh*t, then Gear.Club Unlimited is certainly recommended.

In the end then, Gear.Club Unlimited is a fun but flawed racer.

I really like Gear.Club, though it is overly simple as far as "serious racers" go, while also lacking the personality and spirit that makes an arcade game soar.

Gear.Club Unlimited may be the only racing car game on the Nintendo Switch for the moment, but it squanders this early lead on a repetitive career, underwhelming presentation and functional, but uninspired gameplay with a price that feels too high.

Gear.Club Unlimited is an all-around simple affair. Almost all of the races are short, which is complemented by the very lengthy campaign. The racing is purely arcade in style, and it's more exciting when playing against others instead of against the passive AI. It may not look like a AAA title, but the performance holds up well, and the sense of speed feels right. While not the greatest representation of what a traditional racing game on the Switch should be, Gear.Club Unlimited will hopefully serve as a catalyst to bring more racing titles to the Switch.

The car design is beautiful, the racing is smooth and fluid, and the inclusion of the performance workshop is a welcome addition. While it does fall short of becoming a viable replacement for Forza fans, it does provide the Switch with a fun racing game for enthusiasts looking for a more realistic racing experience.

Gear.Club Unlimited is a clear recommendation to buy. Despite one or two weaknesses I could not get off the screen during the test and had to take forced breaks over Amazon's Alexa. More engine power here, a different color there or simply expand and rebuild the workshop. The game profits from the fast loaded and short races. So you don't even have to plan 20 minutes to get ahead in any case. The game experience is completed by the online league, where you can compete against Ghosts real opponents and get on the podium.

If you own a PC, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4 there are plenty of other racing games worth your attention. However, if you are Switch owner looking for a more grounded racing experience Gear.Club Unlimited is up to the task. It’s a middle of the road racer, but as with so many Switch games, Gear.Club Unlimited is elevated by your ability to take it on the road with you in handheld mode and definitely suits the smaller-screen experience.

Gear.Club Unlimited is a very basic racing game. There are cars that go fast and race around a track. It is completely functional. But it is also completely devoid of heart.

Gear.Club Unlimited isn’t a terrible game by any means. It just falls short. I’ll be honest in that I was expecting something more polished from the studio behind the far better Test Drive: Unlimited. Maybe if this sells, a sequel would follow that formula more. At $50 bucks though, I would pass. The game has it’s roots too far into its mobile sibling and even removing all the timers and microtransactions, $50 doesn’t feel like a good deal. Can the game be fun, sure, and being that it’s the only game of its kind on the Switch right now it’s serviceable. My recommendation though, go download the mobile version and see if you enjoy the physics. If they resonate with you then I would say give Gear.Club Unlimited a shot. Just maybe wait for a sale.

Gear.Club Unlimited is never going to cut it if you're in the market for a portable Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo, but if treated like an arcade racer which you can pick up and put down liberally, you'll absolutely find some lasting enjoyment with Eden's racer. With lots of variety on tracks, championships, cars and upgrades, the value of the overall package becomes more desirable every time you boot it up.

Gear.Club Unlimited is a worthy racing game pick for the Nintendo Switch, and a great comeback of veteran studio Eden Games. While you should expect a title as demanding visually as Forza, the game is a perfect balance of both arcade and racing simulations, with a wealth of content that will keep you busy for a long time.

This is the Switch’s first realistic racing title, and it’s a damn good one.
