With The Surge 2, the franchise is finally hitting the upward swing that a non-From Software title deserves in the hardcore action-RPG/Hack-and-Slash genre. Here’s to more titles in the Surge universe …

Surge's main focus has always been on its combat aspect, and Surge 2 delivers on this promise too. However, other important elements have experienced a setback which means Surge 2, as an overall package, is not much of an evolution in comparison to the prior title. Graphics design is especially disappointing. If you enjoyed the original, it is more than likely that you will enjoy this one too, but keep your expectations on the same level too.

The Surge 2 is still clunky, still has issues with boss fights and it still needs a bit more polish overall. Nevertheless, it poses interesting questions about power projection and how a city can fall into despair – and if it’s right or wrong to judge those affected by it.

You awake in a weird lab dressed in gowns and this is where you make your character. Face, hair color etc. You were the only survivor on a plane crash, after that, not much is revealed. The hospital is deserted except for the insane enemies. You'll have to fight your way through these guys. It took me more than a couple times to even get past the first part. No weapons in hand and no armor, you will rely on your fist.

Altogether The Surge 2 is a successful sequel, which not only reinterprets the usual Souls mechanics, but has completely developed its own gameplay mechanics and puts them in the foreground. It plays faster and more fluently than its predecessor. The combat system is simply successful and is enormously fun with the wonderfully animated finish moves. Only the less impressive design of the bosses and thus also the boss fights lag behind those of the predecessor. The basic story of the game is very interesting and even has some social criticism traits. However, the plot quickly degenerates into a boring scavenger hunt. However, this doesn't harm the motivation to explore the interesting world, to find and level up Loot.

Aside from borrowing heavily from its inspirations, The Surge 2 is a great action-RPG that has enough going for it to set it apart from what came before it.

The Surge 2 is a satisfyingly challenging game with fluid, fast and intense combat that rewards players investment. It’s not going to change the minds of Soulsborne detractors, but it’s got enough smart, unique features and interesting evolutions of the genre’s systems to put it on the radar of its fans. It’s far from a FromSoftware level game, but it’s a worthy alternative with a lot to offer.

Despite it’s difficulty and what seems to be a never ending grind The Surge 2 is a good game. Some of its shortcomings can be overlooked such as access to a map which is in the wild and keeping track of your quests can be confusing at times. It’s challenges and intense action will keep you coming back for more. The need to adapt keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting.

From its title screens to its combat mechanics, The Surge 2 copy/pastes a great deal from the two-year-old original and while it moves the franchise into a more open and populated world, I was hoping for a more dramatic evolutionary leap. Like its Soulsborne models and its predecessor, The Surge 2 is a challenging game, made more so by an inconsistent frame rate and sometimes imprecise combat controls.

The Surge 2 improves upon the first game in almost every way which is a huge testament to how far Deck 13 have come as a developer. If you disliked the first game and found no enjoyment anywhere, you’ll most likely find nothing for you here but if there were parts you enjoyed about the original, the Surge 2 improves upon it and makes the sci-fi Soulslike genre it’s own.

The Surge 2 hosts some of the best combat and customization seen in the genre it inhabits. That alone makes it worth the admission price, even for those less inclined to more challenging video games. Slick, vicious, fun. Much like wrestling a greasy bear.

The bottom line, The Surge 2 is a fairly large shift in the series and amputations are simply satisfactory. However, if I stop talking for a while as a serial killer and rather focus on the technical state of the game, I have to mention loading textures. The level is missing many times, even you or other characters. It doesn't matter if you play the performance mode or frame rate mode on consoles. The title is simply less optimized than the first episode, which, together with other shortcomings, drops the recommendation rate to 8 points out of ten. Number one earned 4 points out of 5 in the old ranking, which could be compared to the current seven to eight. So it is up to you whether you try the first episode first or jump straight into the actions and nerves of Jericho.

One of the things that’s hard to admit is that despite its performance issues, The Surge 2 is fantastic and the Premium Edition assures this to newcomers and veterans alike with plenty of DLC (coming in a separate review) to enjoy.

The Surge franchise has a bright future ahead of itself, and while it may have hit a small bump in the road with it’s sequel, it’s learning curbs will only help better their development heading into the next generation of gaming. The Surge 2 is well worth your time, if your a fan of any action RPG or Souls-like title.

The Surge 2 is a likeable game despite some oddities with its cheating AI and lack of diversity with its locations. Once you get a feel for its combat beats, it’s a fun game that keeps you coming back for more. Gamers honed on hack-n-slash type experiences will probably find this too-focused and unforgiving to be appealing. Souls-like fans might enjoy what is on offer here despite the way some actions are perhaps too easy in one-direction and too-tough in the other. Either way, if you can reside somewhere in the middle of these elements you’ll find an enjoyable post-apocalyptic romp.

It is the direct continuation of The Surge, a game tell us the nanito's story, a disease it is destined to destroy society. The Surge 2 is an Action-RPG with Soulborne combat with much to offer. We find an upload title that the precuel, but although it shows that it needs more work, especially in combat, where one lost second could mean the dead.

Overall, The Surge 2 is a really improved sequel in almost all areas of the game. The combat is even more exciting, and the gameplay has received all the necessary improvements and although it is not at the level it could be it is surely on the right track.
