The original version had the potential to be a classic multiplayer horror game, but this updated edition still feels as hokey and unrefined as the movies it's based on.

Friday the 13th: Ultimate Slasher Edition represents the culmination of the last two years of development for the iconic masked murderer and his dippy camp counselor victims. As a result, we find a well-balanced and fun asymmetric 7v1 slasher that we can take on the go. The only thing letting this ultimate edition down is the underpowered hardware of the Nintendo Switch. Come for the pure fan-service cat-and-mouse gameplay, but know that it'll be better on every other platform.

Friday the 13th: Ultimate Slasher Edition is not perfect by any means, but it is a perfect representation of the movie series as a whole. By providing players thrills and tense moments any Nintendo Switch owning horror fan should enjoy it, even with some of its deficiencies.

While Friday The 13th suffers from some overbearing technical issues, it’s simply a blast to play. Despite the graphical downgrade, you’re still going to have a blast with the Nintendo Switch version. Just prepare for a glitchy, thrilling, disaster of a good time.

Friday The 13th: Ultimate Slasher Edition is a feature-rich version of the multiplayer game, but it's hard to see the Switch as its ideal home.

Friday the 13th: The Game - Ultimate Slasher Edition serves up a bloody feast that's a treat for schlock horror fans who want an authentic Jason experience while taking that tricky asymmetrical multiplayer template and making it truly enjoyable. With a ton of extra skins, weapons, signature kills and more this complete edition couldn't be any more stacked with DLC. Sure, it's still a little janky, but with servers that are seemingly holding and two years of refinements straight out of the box, this multiplayer gem still knows how to make an entrance on Switch. Mrs Voorhees will be pleased.

Friday the 13th: The Game Ultimate Slasher Edition comes down to what you find important. If you want to play offline with bots or just casually play as Jason, odds are you'll get bored in an hour or two. However, if you have friends or have a love of mind games, there is plenty of things to do. Every match is less about finishing whatever task you decide to complete and more figuring out how to best your opponent(s). The gameplay style is a bit limited, as is variety but there is enough to see the value.

What Friday the 13th: The Game on Switch lacks in graphical fidelity, it makes up for in consistent fun.

After the roller-coaster of experience with the launch of Friday the 13th Game and ongoing lawsuits with the original writer of the script for Friday the 13th that may mean the end of any more DLC plans for this game - this pack is actually what the game should have been in 2017. Simply put this is a valuable collector's item not just for horror fans but for anyone fond of the '80s to share with future generations for years to come or just to fire up whenever you need to visit that hockey mask-wearing terror!

If you’re a die-hard fan of the franchise, you might get a few nostalgic kicks out of Friday the 13th: The Game. But if you’re simply looking for a horror-themed multiplayer, this doesn’t hold a candle to Dead by Daylight

Though I've always been a fan of the concept of asymmetric multiplayer games (a game where you're not playing with evenly-balanced sides, one side will be more powerful but less numerous) there's no denying they aren't for everyone...

I thoroughly enjoyed playing Friday the 13th and am certain to be playing it for a long time to come. There’s no doubt in my mind that I will be getting the physical when it comes out, because it was everything I hoped for. Over the top, campy at times and a good server would get your heart pumping. The different levels of customization, from animations perks, and costumes added something extra still to the game. If you enjoy playing online and have played this or other games such as Dead by Daylight (on other systems) then you not only know what you are getting yourself in for, but can rest certain that you are going to enjoy yourself.

I’m not really sure whether the Switch port of Friday the 13th was a good idea given the player economics of niche titles, but perhaps the strength of the movie franchise and the game’s promise (if not its execution) is enough to garner sufficient interest. In fact, it clearly must be, as I have been able to find lobbies to play in (albeit with wait times of up to 1-2 minutes), and they’re usually full, so if this is where you want to play this game, you can definitely do so. That being said, Friday the 13th on Switch has the deck stacked against it for a host of reasons. Yes, it is the same game as the one on PC, and yes it “works,” and yes, most of the charm and authenticity that makes the game feel like a proper homage to a much-beloved horror series remains intact (sh-sh-sh-ah-ah-ah!). Unfortunately, much of the magic is lost in the compromises made to get the game running on the Switch hardware, and playing it feels more akin to controlling a lumbering corpse than a spry teenager.

I can’t stress enough how much fun Friday the 13th: The Game Ultimate Slasher Edition is. Each round you play online is unique from the last one, offering hours of replayability and exciting experiences. I don’t know how many times I would sit down to play the game and find myself saying “Ok, just one more round” multiple times as my wife would yell at me to go to bed – “Oh, I’m sorry dear, I’m just decapitating counsellors because they suck!!”. The Nintendo Switch version of the game is great as it has all the DLC and you can play it on the go.

Even with the restrictions Illfonic has had to endure regarding the license, it has still made great use of it. The core game may be a tad clunky at times, and not much of a looker, but the love for Friday the 13th can be felt from the title screen onwards.

When it works, Friday the 13th is a truly exciting bout of cat-and-mouse gameplay that offers plenty of thrills and tense moments, but technical issues, clunkiness and a laborious levelling grind can add up to frustration.
