It's almost hard to talk about Daymare: 1998 without bringing up Resident Evil. Developer Invader Studios had its roots as a group of fans working to...

Daymare: 1988 is a love letter to Oldschool Survival Horror Games that often loses itself in the survival aspect and has sadly besides that not much more to offer than a lot of nostalgia. If you are an Oldschool Resident Evil Fan that is looking for some Challenges you should still get this game.

I enjoyed my time with Daymare. It’s a nice homage to the horror games of yesteryear, I would say however that the game feels a little short, (there’s an achievement for completing the game in under 4 hours which you’re absolutely not going to do on the first playthrough) but any negatives I’ve mentioned don’t affect the overall enjoyment and excitement that the game brings. It’s jumpscare horror done well, for the first release from an independent studio I’d say it was a good effort, and should Invader Studios continue down the horror route they will no doubt be ones to watch out for at some point. If you have ever enjoyed any survival horror games and/or remember the 90’s you should pick this up; don’t expect anything new, but expect to have gory, tense fun navigating an already familiar environment.

Daymare: 1998 could have been a good survival horror but the flaws surpass the merits. Nonetheless, the team has put some nice efforts into it.

Weak third-person survival horror from Resident Evil series fans. But there are some good puzzle elements.

Daymare: 1998 succeeds at recreating the classic feel of late 90's survival horror, but in more ways than it should. The game is cumbersome and frustrating at times when more modern takes have smoothed over those particular rough edges.

Daymare: 1998 is an interesting homage to the Resident Evil franchise, complete with 90s graphics, cheesy characters, and a tough difficulty. Inventory management forces you to think carefully, while boss fights can be tedious and unfair.

Daymare: 1998 is Invader Studios' labor of love. It's not perfect by any means, but it can be a nice experience for every true fan of the genre that can stand its little missteps.

As I said, high highs and low lows. I’d still recommend this game if good world-building, easter-egg hunting and puzzles are what you are looking for in survival horror titles because those elements are fantastic.

Daymare 1998 is a competent survival horror game that borrows too heavily from its influences to do anything interesting or unique and thus suffers from poor writing and uninspired gameplay

Daymare 1998 is a mediocre game overall. I enjoyed solving the puzzles and having some challenge, but the game is full of issues like how slow it is, and how weak the audio/visual presentation is.

Daymare: 1998 feels like going back to visit a friend from school who still lives a youthful life free of responsibility. It's fun for a while, but you eventually realise that there is a reason you left that lifestyle behind. Were this released before Capcom's own Resident Evil 2 remake, its issues might not have been so apparent. Oddly stranded in time, this now feels too clunky for newcomers and is one for genre aficionados interested in the evolution of survival horror.

Daymare 1998 is meant to be a blast from the past but all it really does is destroy your old memories of those 90s horror games you played so long ago

If you are a fan of action-based horror games, I think you should give this game a try. It reminded me greatly of Resident Evil 4, both in atmosphere and gameplay-wise, and we all know the world could use more awesome zombie games.

I like what Invader Studios is trying to do here, but if the actual Resident Evil 2 remaster didn’t exist, this could’ve filled that gap more substantially. But Resident Evil 2 this is not, no matter how hard it tries. There’s a fundamental and unacceptable lack of polish here. Daymare: 1998 is mostly just unimaginative and unfun, and for a game that is primarily a shooter, it doesn’t even do that well enough. I’m trying to think of a place for Daymare: 1998, and while it certainly has one in survival-horror, it’s going to be mostly at the bottom.

By taking elements of iconic 90's horror staples, Invader Studios have resurrected a Frankensteined horror experience that is far less than it's borrowed parts. From the glacial pacing to the ponderous in-game action Daymare 1998 rather than invoking terror instead delivers tedium.

I would certainly recommend this game to fans of the early Resident Evil games but if you aren't a fan of those games I could see it getting old fast, as most of the "nostalgia" of the game consists of dated mechanics in combat and puzzle solving.

Daymare: 1998 strives to create a more than sincere tribute to all those horror games of the 32-128 bit era, unfortunately it doesn't succeed completely because of serious performance problems, disproportionate difficulty and an upgradeable pointing system. Graphically it looks great and offers enough content to give it a shot if you like this kind of games.

Daymare has some good ideas, but it has too many flaws to do anything besides remind survival horror fans of better games.
