Streets of Rage 4 is an incredible game. Where I am now, compared to where I was when I played the series originally, is very different. However, this will easily become another nostalgic memory in years to come from playing with my wife, alone, and with a very good friend who lives just too far away for my liking. I think you’ll most likely already guessed my rating for this title –

Streets of Rage 4 is an excellent brawling title, one of if the not the best within the genre in literal decades.

When the only gripes I have are some online flaws and a bit of lacking variety with certain enemy types, that’s pretty much a good sign that the game is solid all around. Still a bummer that the online situation isn’t fixed yet, but at the very least, local-play and the 1v1 battle modes are still absolutely worth your time, and I cannot recommend this game enough. It just misses the bar for being a perfect game in my book, but I still consider this to be the best in the SOR series, proving that you can return to an old franchise and make it even better.

Streets of Rage 4 is a worthy follow-up to the original Streets of Rage trilogy. Highly recommended for both old and newcomers.

Ultimately, while Streets of Rage 4 feels like a game by the fans, for the fans, that’s selling it short. It’s a great throwback to a genre long-thought dead, revitalized with modern technology while maintaining just what made the franchise special in the first place.

I never would have imagined that the weirdest thing of 2020 is that I’m playing Streets of Rage 4. I never saw this coming. I never once considered that after 26-years since Streets of Rage 3 we’d get a sequel. How did this even happen? Where did this come from? I don’t know. I don’t care, because Streets of Rage 4 is a hell of a sequel.

EXCELLENT - Gamers have overlooked the beat’em up genre for decades, but Streets of Rage 4 is here to knock some sense into them. It walks that fine line of providing just the right amount nostalgia while at the same time injecting new characters and gameplay to create a fantastic experience that should appeal to the teenagers of the ‘80s and today. Grab a friend and kick some butt. Don’t sleep on this one!

Streets of Rage 4 is a welcome return for a classic franchise. Hardcore fans of the series are likely to be smitten with the amount of fan service and love that has gone in to this and rightly so. In not overhauling the game further though it may lose some appeal with new gamers.

Streets of Rage 4 didn’t need to reinvent the formula; it just needed to expand upon it. There are some great changes here that help elevate the gameplay and combat, but the bland story and environments drag it down a bit. These things won’t deter those looking for a new Streets of Rage entry, especially one that has such great combat.

Streets of Rage 4 is the perfect sequel, it builds upon the original trilogy whilst modernising it without alienating fans. Visually the game is gorgeous, all hand-drawn with brilliant lighting effects, visual styles, character designs, and original pixel-art protagonists and special moves. The music is just as good as I remember it, allowing you to alternate between the new music or classic tunes, this really is the perfect homage to the infamous Mega Drive games. Although not a very long game, you’ll get hours of entertainment out of Streets of Rage 4 thanks to the satisfying combat and progression-based rewards.

Streets of Rage 4 pulls off an almost impossible task and revives a long dormant franchise in a very satisfying way. I personally would've liked a more gritty look and a little more innovation on the gameplay side but all in all, this is exactly what I expected from a Streets of Rage title in 2020.
