There as much to enjoy as there is to frustrate in this short, sparky revival of the cult classic.

Battletoads not only revives the long-dormant beat 'em up franchise, it makes it fun to play for everyone instead of only ultra-hardcore masochists. And if they made a TV show about these hilarious characters, I'd watch it.

A game so bizarre it's hard to tell whether it's purposefully trolling its audience or if it really thinks its random collection of mini-games, crass humour, and wasted potential is a sensible way to go about rebooting Battletoads.

Battletoads is another one of 2020's infamous oddities. I suspect it's going to be highly polarizing (not only due to the adherence to retro style difficulty but the newness of the art and humor), but it somewhat won me over due to sheer force of will. I also can safely assume that I'm going to be on the higher-end of the spectrum of liking it: but if we never see these dudes again because this game was an absolute cacophony, I'll be a bit bummed.

The Battletoads have returned with a completely renewed title adapted to the times, a cartoon style that looks quite good and does not detract at all. The touches of humor will be present throughout the adventure and the mix of genres gives us a fairly balanced compendium, although lacking in content and excessively short.

Without wishing to damn it with faint praise, Battletoads is pretty much exactly what you'd think it would be. Taking clear influence from the 90s classics whilst adding in some welcome modern approaches, there is plenty here to enjoy while it lasts. An ideal perfect Game Pass title, this is well worth checking out, warts and all.

Battletoads pays homage to the classic 1991 Rare game with a great variety of gameplay mechanics. Beat´em up levels are well crafted, 2D platform levels and twin stick shooter sections are not so good, but still enjoyable, while turbobikes levels are frustrating.

Battletoads does have its good moments, between its beat 'em up gameplay, metal-heavy soundtrack, and strong boss design. It's just drowned out by its awful pacing and poor comedy that gets maybe a couple of chuckles from the entirety of its brief five-hour adventure.

The return of Battletoads is a surprising and carefully crafted game in many ways. But the desire to do too much makes him lose lucidity and ends up watering down an adventure in itself too short.

The 1991 Battletoads fell in love with a generation of gamers. Now, almost 30 years later, the new Battletoads will once again win the hearts of all those and, at the same time, will make a new generation of players fall in love. As beat 'em up it is very remarkable, but the game is so varied that we can hardly say that this is the real basis of the proposal. It's also a great platformer, a great action game, a great party game ... In conclusion, a game as fun as it is sympathetic and a great must-have for Xbox Game Pass subscribers this summer. It's very short, but you're going to play it at least as many times as there are frogs in the game.

Dlala has implemented just enough obnoxious stuff between Battletoads' good bits to stop me, a pretty freakish Battletoads fan, from recommending that anyone buy it outright.

While the art style and crude humor may be the most polarizing aspects on the surface, the lack of any consistency when it comes to gameplay and level design is the real disappointment in what was supposed to be the triumphant return of Battletoads.

Battletoads is the reboot you never knew you wanted. It's fun to play and makes you laugh, two perfect ingredients for making a game well worth playing.

The lack of online co-op in the new Battletoads is definitely the game's biggest flaw, so if fans can overlook that, they will find what is otherwise a great beat 'em up throwback with hilarious scenes, fun combat, and plenty of variety. And with it being on Xbox Game Pass, subscribers have no reason not to check it out. Overall, this Battletoads comeback is a major success and is sure to leave a smile on players' faces, and so hopefully fans don't have to wait 26 years for the next entry in the series.

Battletoads (2020) keeps the soul of the notorious original game intact while revitalizing it with interesting minigames, hilarious writing, and couch co-op that makes this a worthy reason to revisit Zitz, Pimple, and Rash. While the absence of online co-op is pretty disappointing and the beat 'em up gameplay can become dull by the end of the campaign, this short ride is one I can full-throatedly recommend.

Many of Battletoads' design sensibilities may seem archaic in 2020, but that was ultimately Dlala trying to build on the chaotic formula set by the original. Battletoads struggles as a single-player game but soars as a varied couch co-op experience party game for up to three friends. And hey, it's often laugh-out-loud funny too.

It's been over 20 years since the last Battletoads game-and it was worth the wait. Battletoads is an enjoyable game that brings back the fun beat-em-up aspects of the originals, as well as humorous cutscenes, and minigame stages that show just what happens after the Toads realize their glory days are over.
