Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is far from a double-bogey catastrophe of a golfing game, and has all the fundamentals to challenge for honours. With a little extra love and lots of additional content, it could potentially go beyond par and soar like an eagle.

A new face and name certainly brings a sense of freshness to Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, but the novelty isn't enough to make up for the lack of content. While there's a decent game of golf here, it won't be occupying the top of the leaderboard any time soon.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour plays well, but it's also intermittently ugly, and there's isn't nearly enough content here for the asking price.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour plays a great game of golf and has noticeably better graphics than the series previous-gen outings. There's not an awful lot wrong with the core game, and there are some nice surprises. The problem is that the lack of modes, courses, customisation options and players makes it feel only half-complete. This is a problem EA can fix with free DLC, but for now this feels like the foundation of a brilliant golf sim rather than the finished article.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is the perfect example of a solid game that's brought down by how it looks and handles. If you can get over the paltry career mode, there is some fun to be had here, though a few patches and refinements would do a lot of good.

Rory McIlroy’s PGA Tour would’ve been a much easier sell on platforms that didn’t already have a game or two in the genre available, but there really isn’t a lot that should make it appeal to players who want a long-lasting experience. Despite its improvements and additions it just takes too much away from its arsenal to stand on its own in strong posture.

PGA Tour's newest offering, championed by Rory McIiroy. It completely misses the green, however, and like a bad tee shot, seems to go off into the rough.

The stripping of established features and modes is a curious decision on EA's behalf – You'd think that, as with most other yearly sporting iterations, that the focus would be on innovating and building upon a proven foundation rather than unnecessarily streamlining the experience.

I shouldn't allow the presentation to bug me, but for Rory McIlroy, it does. Coupled with the limited range of play modes and a relatively shallow range of courses, and I was left with the impression that this game was certainly not EA Sport's focus this year. The core physics and mechanics of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour are quality, and I like golf, so I still give this a passing grade, but it's hard not to wish that there was credible competition for EA in the sport of golf, to spur the publisher out of some of the complacency that is seems to be in.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour isn't a bad game; there's just not enough of it. Its predecessors not only supplied a good time in-game but also stacked the deck with a lot of value. We've talked about the lack of golfers and courses, but there's also a lack of golf play styles and even a lack of differing weather conditions. As good as the playing experience is, a sports game should also feel complete. Instead, we're left with untapped potential and questions that will dog designers until the next hole.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour for the PlayStation 4 takes about one step forward and two steps back when compared to previous entries in the franchise. It's a game that looks and plays well but it's also a game that feels light on content. This entire package is then tied together with one of the most horrendous menu interfaces in recent memory. To put is simply: The game feels unfinished.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is a disappointing golf game that just barely manages to make the cut.

A solid golf game that suffers from a lack of courses and little in the way of imaginative modes. A step backwards from the most recent Tiger Woods games, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is not the series refresh we'd hoped for.

The gameplay basics are fine, but this is the absolute bare bones of what a golf game should be – with less than half the amount of content of the last game in the series.

[A]s much as Night Golf and reduced loading times are fantastic additions to the standard PGA Tour offering, I would rather have more courses, golfers, and character customization with clean next-gen graphics. Content and execution outweigh novelty modes and convenience.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour brings back the franchise after a short hiatus and while it looks and plays great, the game itself feels like only a tease for the full potential that this series has shown in the past.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour continues the trend of well-known sports franchises making disappointing, threadbare debuts on new consoles.

It's not often that you can say a previous iteration in a sports franchise is significantly better than the newest and prettiest, but for EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour that is very much the case. The graphical upgrades and gameplay tweaks don't make up for the massive lack of depth and sacked features, meaning that this outing is very much below the property's usual par.

Sadly for all concerned, especially those that had pre-ordered and had been counting down the days, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is a huge disappointment on multiple levels and if there was a viable alternative then it wouldn't do anywhere the numbers it likely will do in the first few weeks of launch. Please EA, go back to the drawing board and invest.
