Biomutant is an embarrassment and is one of the worst games I’ve played in probably the last decade or so. It’s a game that severely suffers from an identity crisis and doesn’t know what it wants to be. Is it an open world action game that resembles Witcher 3 mixed with fast paced hack’n’slash combat? Or is it Zelda: Breath of the Wild with an amazing sense of exploration? The answer is that its neither, its just a bad game all around.

I wanted to love Biomutant. I was rooting for Biomutant. I wanted to embrace this game, and it just wouldn't let me.

Overall, it’s hard to recommend Biomutant when there are so many other games doing similar things better. The narration absolutely murders any immersion or character that the game might have salvaged from its focus-grouped setting, while the gameplay mechanics just aren’t strong enough to carry the game alone. Having one of these aspects work would raise the game to a respectable middle-of-the-road Late 2021s Video Game, but failing on both leaves a world that sadly isn’t worth exploring.

Biomutant doesn’t do anything well enough to make you care–ultimately its most grievous disappointment.

Biomutant’s feature list seems to include everything a successful open-world action RPG needs. But journey through its towns, fields and bunkers, and there’s no intrigue in its exploration or weight in its relationship building. Not even a worthy combat challenge to hold everything together. With so many ideas left under-developed, it wastes a setting that had far more potential.

The scale of its ambition makes the radioactive leak all the more widespread.

Despite some interesting ideas, Biomutant commits the cardinal sin of media — it’s boring, and that ultimately seals its fate. The game has a gorgeous world and adorable character designs, yet it’s soulless and falls far short of its ambitions.

Biomutant is the least fun I’ve had with a game in a while. Broken, shallow, and above all, BORING. This mutant should’ve stayed in the Ooze.

Biomutant is trying to be too many things. It can be fun when you're comboing supernatural abilities and homemade weaponry to take down a group of bad guys as a furry little post-apocalyptic ronin. But its RPG mechanics are so clunky and uneven, and its various story threads are so underdeveloped, that you'll end up feeling like nothing you do actually matters. If you just want to explore yet another open-world and beat up some bad guys, then Biomutant will keep you busy for a few hours. Just be ready to encounter a slew of baffling and questionably executed design choices.

Biomutant could have been something special, but the ambitious project fails to capitalise on what it does differently. Trapped in the clutches of an open world from a generation past, its own ideas are thwarted by an overload of other mechanics and overwhelming menus. By trying to do so much, Biomutant skipped the part where it built a solid basis to work from. While there's still potential here, Experiment 101's first attempt hasn't realised it.

It's very pretty but this patchwork of other game's ideas never has enough of its own to keep you interested during the repetitive and overfamiliar open world action.

Biomutant has plenty of room for improvement and the best way to describe it is as an utter waste of potential.

Biomutant became a victim of its own ambitious. This is a painfully boring open world game with many unnecessary mechanics and "more stuff, less quality" approach.

Offensively mediocre in multiple ways, Biomutant is a waste of resources. It's not terrible, but there's no excuse for it to be this vapid and underwhelming.

Those were the first words mentioned about Biomutant, found in an advertisement in GamesMarkt, a German gaming magazine. However, it was officially announced a couple of days later on the 21st of August 2017: since then, the hype and expectations have been growing and growing. Personally, I haven’t been following Biomutant‘s development from the very beginning. I purposely avoided looking too much into it, first learning about it I believe at E3 last year. For open-world RPGs, I love experiencing them with just a basic idea of the story!

There aren’t that many impressive things to find in Biomutant and it doesn’t feel like even the developers had a clear idea what was the goal here. Combat is too simplistic and kind of boring and the way that the narrator spells everything out becomes tiresome after a short while. The colors are vibrant and the beasts look unique but the whole thing just doesn’t come together in a satisfying way.

The open-world aspect of Biomutant did more harm than good, with the gargantuan, post-apocalyptic realm this heroic, mutated rodent will explore being mostly an empty one, and with the rest of the experience being repetitive and unpolished. More of a disappointment rather than a bad game, try it out only if willing to spend around many fun, but not that fun hours.

Much like the character you create, Biomutant feels like a Frankenstein creation of various ideas. Some are good, some are bad, but the end result is a misshapen product which feels messy and buried in its own ideas. Areas of the game that should have received more attention - like it's quest design - feel relatively barebones, while others feel overly complex. The repetitive nature of looting, levelling up, and looting some more never truly evolve and make the beautiful world often feel lifeless. We really wish we loved Biomutant, but unfortunately, it's a game with many ambitious ideas, but lacks the conviction to fully utilise them.
