Battlefield 2042 presented the past in the best possible way in the outstanding Portal mode, but it did not succeed in anything else, as it was suffering from many technical problems and suffered from great chaos in the play style.

With some patches and tweaks, this could be a strong shooter experience, but it has fundamental issues that will not be fixed so easily. Let’s see if DICE gets the support to do so; otherwise, this entry will simply be another casualty for a franchise in desperate need of a win.

Battlefield 2042 is a game with some seriously lofty ambitions, because destruction and warfare on a scale we've never seen before is always going to grab the headlines. Unfortunately, more effort has gone into those jaw-dropping moments, like seeing huge buildings topple to the ground, than it has into making the game fun and balanced. There's a solid foundation here, but this entry needed a lot longer in the oven to iron out the main modes and provide some more variety into Hazard Zone, because the result is a real low point in the franchise.

While I did enjoy quite a lot of my time in Battlefield 2042 (especially in the new Hazard Zone mode), there are a mix of gameplay, technical, and functionality issues of varying severity that really hamper the experience. This game is somewhat recommendable to Battlefield fans and those with a general interest in military-style shooters, but there is a strong chance that the game’s current flaws are going to really limit the potential for many. Because of this, if you’re considering this game, you may want to wait for a patch or two before you deploy to the battlefield.

Disjointed mess of a game „Battlefield 2042” is a latest entry in a franchise known for it’s crucial paradox: massive scale gels with tight, well-paced battle encounters. Except it doesn’t gel this time around. It’s more like Werner Herzog movie: you trek tirelessly through the mountains, forests and rivers and then get shot in the head by some chilled out dude with a sniper rifle. As Herzog would put it: „This universe is monstrously indifferent to the presence of man”.

Battlefield 2042 definitely isn't the Battlefield to rule all Battlefields, quite the contrary. The newest shooter from DICE fails to capture what made past Battlefield titles successful and unique. Add to that a myriad of problems that ruin the entire experience and you have a recipe for disaster. Luckily there is still Battlefield Portal which gives us the tools to create a Battlefield that we want. There is still a lot of potential for the future, but right now Battlefield 2042 isn't in a good state.

Disappointing is the best way to describe Battlefield 2042. It can be fun at times, but also frustrating and downright dull. Its maps are impressive in scale, with weather effects that are a sight to behold. But they’re just too big, filled with vast open spaces that don’t do the game any favours. Mix in a variety of bugs and unfortunate design decisions, and you have the weakest Battlefield game in years. Can it be turned around? Possibly. But whether you’re a fan of the series or not, you’re definitely better off waiting for it to receive some more updates before you jump in.

Battlefield 2042 mixes muddy combat, poor performance, and bind-boggling design choices for one of the series' most underbaked offerings yet.

Battlefield 2042 isn't just a lackluster Battlefield game, it's a bad FPS in general. It's an overcorrect after Battlefield 5's marketing was criticized for its "out-there" CGI trailers. It isn't clear what Battlefield 2042 is, or even what it wants to be, beyond a bland step back. One can hope for meaningful content updates later down the line, but the ship is sinking before even leaving port.

We loved Battlefield because it wasn’t Call of Duty or Counter-Strike or Fortnite or Apex or any other popular shooter. This mismanaged project clearly needed more time in the oven and a cohesive design that works to Battlefield’s strengths rather than a game attempting to be multiple things to multiple audiences. In a year where so many releases have been marred by a lack of polish and bugs, Battlefield 2042 may be the biggest offender.

'Battlefield 2042' is a huge disappointment for gamers and the Battlefield franchise. Had this been the product of an indie developer, then this might be a different story as it would be understandable how a game like this could be the product of an independent studio that doesn't have enormous corporate backing. Instead, EA pumped more resources into creating a CGI film that acts as the only real source of storyline context than ensuring the game was going to live up to the enormous amount of hype they were trying to create. I hate saying such negative things in my reviews, but when a game developer can't be bothered to even try and live up to it's own legacy, then I have to call it as I see it and for that very reason, I don't recommend this game. Not even the nostalgia or temptation of 'Battlefield Portal' is enough to save this game from itself.

Battlefield 2042 has plenty of great ideas, but it feels like a package pushed out the door too early and all so that EA could place it the free-for-all that is Battlefield VS Call of Duty VS Halo for the holiday FPS favourite. Not a decision that'll be worth whatever this achieves for their bottom dollar, and DICE deserves better.

At a time when our money is so devalued, I certainly don't recommend BF 2042, which is a tracksuit bottoms, to anyone. I'm not saying you can't enjoy it, but the game's not over. It's obvious...

Battlefield 2042 definitely feels like a step in the wrong direction for EA and Dice. Although battle royale and combat sims can be fun to some players, they are not for everyone. The loss of a single-player campaign and other features make Battlefield 2042 a ghost of its former self. If you have the time and energy to learn the game’s mechanics, the game can be fun but rather time-consuming. Ultimately this Battlefield is one most players should skip. If EA and Dice continue to improve Battlefield 2042, then it will eventually be worth picking up similar to Star Wars Battlefront 2, but as of now, it is a good idea to wait.

The upside to all this is, DICE can continually push out patches in order to stomp out bugs, add in features, and so on. This is a live service game, so expect more content to be doled out as the game’s lifecyle continues. However, will players still be there when the game finally realizes its potential? We can’t say for certain. As it is right now, one can’t help but feel disappointed at BF2042. It should have beent he big one that made people forget about the sour taste BFV left in everyone’s mouth. But sadly, BF2042 seems to show that DICE has not learned from their past mistakes, and have even created new ones that shouldn’t have been issues at all.

Battlefield 2042 is full of potential, but the problem with potential is that it doesn’t give you value right now. Battlefield 2042 can have moments of brilliance, but its inconsistency issues make those moments few and far between. At least for now.

Battlefield 2042 is currently at best a small, unhealthy snack for on the go, which you absolutely had to buy, but always in the knowledge that it never really takes place nor tastes particularly good. The three big game modes offer a colorful potpourri with something for every type of player, but none of the concepts is really mature. Long-term motivation is lacking shortly after release: The lack of a checkout system seems immature in places, numerous bugs slow down the flow of the game, and missing scoreboards and ranked matches take even more tension out of the gameplay loop. Battlefield 2042 is so trimmed for entertaining fun that it completely loses sight of its possibilities. The focus is clearly on more chaos and less game depth, more trends and less team play, new superlatives but unfortunately less Battlefield. Battlefield 2042 is quick fun for a round in between, but will have a hard time holding its own on the highly competitive shooter market.
