Gynoug Reviews
Gynoug hasn’t quite got that special extra spark that turns a great game into a spectacular one, but even so it’s still a unique and thoroughly enjoyable thirty-year-old shmup capable of standing proudly next to any other sold on the eShop, and yet another affordable retro re-release sitting in that perfect middle ground between modern convenience and hardcore authenticity.
At the same competitive £4.99/$6.99 launch price, Gynoug's a great 2D shooter companion to Gleylancer. Therefore, if Ratalaika's setting its sights on Mega Drive horizontal shmups, then hopefully Hellfire could eventually blast onto modern consoles, as it was also partially published by Masaya.
If you put on the invincibility, players can take down the final boss in maybe 35 minutes. It’s a quick playthrough but altering the cheats or challenging myself and trying to power through it all without cheating could result in hours of play time. For seven bucks, that’s not a bad deal. It’s a classic game that I don’t think many have heard of and one that shoot ‘em up fans will probably want to check out, and with all the features added into this release, it’s a solid package for the purists out there.
The truth is that, without being adept at the genre, I can not deny that Gynoug is an entertaining title, which without becoming an exponent of the genre or having super interesting mechanics, presents us with an experience which serves to kill some free time that we have during the day. However, if you never played it and are looking for a title of this genre, which is not only interesting, but also presents us with a great and interesting challenge, I would tell you to look for another lake and get a copy of Ikaruga. On the other hand, if they never entered this genre but would be interested in trying it, I would also say that they get Ikaruga, but not before starting with Gynoug, since this is not as murderous in its difficulty as the game of ships and shields.

The gameplay is faultless in what it does, but Gynoug doesn't do anything to stand out. If you are nostalgic towards the game or those alike, you'll get much more out of this than someone brand new to Gynoug. Unfortunately, I was the latter.
If you enjoy your shoot ’em ups, Gynoug should absolutely be part of your collection, without question. Here’s hoping it gets suitably honoured with a physical release down the road — it certainly deserves it.
Gynoug should be a fun trip for anyone looking to see what one of the oldest shoot ‘em ups has to offer. The game is punishing but newly added options make it so anyone can see it though to the end. It will only last you a couple hours but considering it’s only a few dollars you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck here.
Gynoug is a memorable shoot 'em up that is a must play for anyone who loves this genre, especially with a retro look. This game will definitely work your eyes to the max, so I recommend playing earlier in the day because late at night when you are tired I am sure you will be frustrated!
Wings of Wor; oops, I mean Gynoug... is a solid shoot 'em up from the golden age of the genre with a clever magic system, stand-out bosses, and there are now interesting cheats to help modernize it all. So, if you enjoy shmups then give it a go, why not?
I was someone who missed out on Gynoug the first time around, and while I am glad I got to experience a “new” Sega game, I wouldn’t say this is a must-have unless this was something from your childhood you’d like to revisit.
The Switch has really seen a strong run of more obscure retro console shooters of late, and while the gameplay of Gynoug may be a bit more generic than its brethren there's no doubt that its general looks, enemies, and vibe is in a class all its own...
An old classic. Gynoug is a game that should be experienced by anyone. Especially fans of the shoot 'em up genre.
Gynoug is not going to win any accolades for originality or for doing anything that is especially exciting but what it does, it does well. It has a good learning curve as well as being technically excellent and enjoyable to play. Let’s not forget that this is a 30-year-old game that has actually aged rather well. It still looks and sounds good and is perfect for fans of this type of game. Gynoug delivers another Shmup classic.
Gynoug is an experience. The gameplay is fine, it does the job and has just enough added gubbins to keep it feeling mostly fresh. The star of the show, however are the visuals. This game comes from a time long forgotten - where dripping, throbbing, scrolling, and pulsating was just an everyday occurrence. For that reason alone, providing the price is right, it’s worth a gander. Aside from that? If you are a fan of Shmups, then Gynoug should satisfy.
Gynoug is a side-scrolling shmup, a.k.a. shoot’em up, which was first released as Wings of Wor way back in 1991 for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. The game tells the story of the angel Wor who must come to the rescue of the Heavens which have been invaded by the demons of Iccus led by the Destroyer.
Gynoug is a fairly average horizontal shooter, even if it’s nowhere near the same exciting level of action that Gleylancer provided. Still, the QOL options here are very welcome, and just like with that game I feel that this port easily makes for the ultimate way to play Gynoug, one that yet again, is far cheaper than buying a real cartridge of it or the US Wings of Wor.
Gynoug is yet another excellent addition to the quickly growing library of shoot ’em up treasures that are being brought back from the depths of expensive online marketplaces and into the hands of players looking to have a fun time with quality shooters such as this. I honestly can’t wait to see what’s next in line.
Gynoug is a relic from the past that I had an absolute blast playing in the present. It took me back to a simpler time of gaming. One where you don’t need excessive plot and gaming gimmicks to impress. Just solid gameplay. Of course this style won’t appeal to everyone. Some folk might question why the game wasn’t just remade from the ground up. Gynoug, for me, has aged surprisingly well as a Mega Drive game and if you somehow missed this back in the day, now is a great time to try it at a fair price point.
The return of Gynoug is a great choice, treasuring an excellent title from the golden age of games. However, all the mystique from that age needs to be explored with the due effort that fans wish and deserve. Even so, it's always good to revisit such a lost gem.

Gynoug is not one of the most common 16-bit games that we see getting a re-release these days, but this 30-year-old 2D shooter deserves to be more known among today's gamers. With the typical punishing difficulty of its time and very packed scenarios that will keep the players extremely busy, Gynoug also comes with the usual options to recreate an experience as close to the original as possible.
