The World Before is more of an interactive story than an adventure game. The gameplay was a letdown, but the story and the world were quite OK. You have to decide yourself what’s more important for you.

Fans of the series will be disappointed that Syberia: The World Before strays far from what was great. It should have been like Tintin, but it’s more like a made-for-TV Lifetime movie. The visuals look awesome but the gameplay and story are vulgar steps backward in the worst ways.

Syberia: The World Before will be most enjoyed by series veterans, but even rookies like me can find enjoyment with an hour or less of research.

Syberia: The World Before is a very mixed bag. With wonderful characters, terrific sights, and a beautiful story, there’s a lot to recommend about it. Unfortunately, that story relies far too much on happenstance, and the more you think about it, the less it makes sense, but if you can suspend your disbelief and just go with it, you’ll find a game that will please long term fans of the series and create some new fans as well.

Syberia: The World Before is a significant next step in the franchise's storyline. Longtime fans will find both challenges and joy in this installment. But being this deep into the narrative means that it is no place for newcomers, even diehard point and click adventure fans.

Syberia: The World Before continues the adventures of Kate Walker with a very delicate storytelling technique. It has a lot of clockpunk-styled mechanical puzzles, with a wide variety of patterns in puzzle solving with great fun. However, its storyline and characterization are hardly satisfactory, and the dialogues and CGs are not set up with any "Skip" options, making the gaming tempo seem very draggy. The fixed camera that does not allow the player to rotate freely causes many problems that affect the experience. The poor localization is even more deadly for this text-dependent storyline-based game.

Even though Syberia: The World Before was so different than the other entries in the franchise in some ways, it was also a return to form in others. The puzzles might not be as bizarre or outside the box as other games, but they also felt more natural to the story. Similarly, the other entries had more whimsical and fantastical elements to them, whereas this game is far more grounded in reality. Although, considering the laughably audacious directions Syberia 3 ventured into, I would definitely count this as a big plus.

Syberia - The World Before is a return to form for the series, and an all-around solid adventure game featuring an engaging story that nicely blends together two different timelines, charming characters and good puzzle design. The experience, however, leaves something to be desired when it comes to innovation, making the game a must-buy only for fans of the series.

Well attached to its inspirations and classic patterns in terms of narration and game design, Syberia The World Before is a very good point and click adventure, and a great tribute to Benoit Sokal.

Despite a slow start and some persistent technical issues that are inexcusable, Syberia: The World Before is a fantastic narrative adventure that continues the series in spectacular fashion, and does Benoit Sokal’s legacy proud. It’s not clear where Syberia as a series goes from here now that the Sokal is sadly no longer around to steer the ship, but I have full faith after playing Syberia: The World Before that Microids is more than capable of continuing to deliver more incredible tales in this universe.

Syberia: The World Before doesn't really add anything new to the saga. But it is a game with a remarkable bill and an interesting story that will keep us glued to the pad wanting to know more about Dana Roze's life.

Syberia: The World Before has finally arrived and, apart from a few inaccuracies here and there, we can safely consider it as a worthy sequel within a saga that deserves to be treated always and only with the utmost respect. This fourth chapter succeeds in the right way, experimenting and adding something new without upsetting in any way the series we knew twenty years ago. A work that may not be perfect, but which does justice to an unforgettable artist like Benoit Sokal.

Syberia: The World Before is a very good adventure game that also serves as a touching capstone to Sokal's career. Most of the puzzles follow a sensible, logical path that is fun to figure out without making you question the solutions. The story is very well told, but the ending is frustrating for those seeking closure. The title also features a gorgeous presentation, so adventure fans who don't mind open-ended narratives will be pleased.
