Digimon Survive tries to be both a visual novel and SRPG, but while it has strengths in the former, it has notable shortcomings in both areas.

Although it's easy to miss the dizzy heights of the Cybersleuth series, it's to be applauded in what has been attempted here - and with an easily accessible series, will convert even the most hardened hater of visual novels.

Hyde wrote a nice story with plenty of nice characters. The tactical RPG part feeling more like something pulling the overall duration of the title and less like an organic part of the game

Digimon Survive is a good — and surprisingly dark — visual novel, with a mediocre turn-based battle system.

Digimon Survive is an exciting alternate take on the tone and style of the Digimon series. It doesn't execute things flawlessly - those opening chapters are a bit of a chore and the tactics gameplay is simple with a capital 'S'. Still, when things kick off and the story starts to come together, it's a suspenseful and gripping journey that I'm glad I got to experience.

While the tactical gameplay of Digimon Survive feels almost like an afterthought, the story does enough heavy lifting to ultimately make the experience worthwhile.

As an avid Digimon fan, I'm disappointed to say that Survive did not meet my expectations at all. The combat is extremely superficial, the writing is as deep as a puddle, and the world is one of the most uninteresting the series has ever produced.

Digimon Survive is an interesting experiment that largely succeeds in taking a beloved children's franchise and giving it a darker tone without completely losing what made it so beloved in the first place. The story is largely engaging and has enough twists and turns to keep things moving forward at a comfortable pace. The gameplay is enjoyable but unexceptional, but the story is the main draw. If you're a fan of Digimon, then Survive is absolutely worth your time. Even casual JRPG fans will likely find the story to be worth a look.

Despite some translation woes, Digimon Survive's narrative still shines brightly. As cruel and dark as its narrative can be, neither you or the characters should ever give up completely. That's the key to survival, and that message is apparent in the character relationships, the battles, and the developments of the story as a whole. Digimon Survive expresses the power that can come from your bonds with others, and how supporting each other can keep hope alive. That's a message worth sharing, and Digimon Survive is a messenger worth experiencing.

Digimon Survive offers a unique spin on the franchise and one that I can appreciate, but it’s a shame the final product turned out like this after all this time.

Digimon Survive has lived up to its long-incubated hype. The story is intriguing and pleasantly mature, the gameplay is simple but enjoyable, and the performances are rock solid. It can be a bit repetitive, but I’d still recommend the game to anyone with a passing interest and a love for narrative-heavy mon games.

Digimon Survive is the latest entry in the series that takes a surprising twist with its setting and visual novel/strategy RPG hybrid. The result is a fresh take that’s fun, challenging, and a familiar treat for those who like monster collecting. Longtime fans should definitely give this a shot, and newcomers who haven’t played any of the previous Digimon games shouldn’t have a problem following the story or any of its proceedings. Despite the unfortunate delays that the game has experienced over the years, Digimon Survive is another worthwhile entry in the long-running series that won’t disappoint.

Digimon Survive certainly won’t be for everyone, but it delivered just what I wanted from it. Providing a solid and rewarding story, a fun and strategic combat system and a mature take on a world many of us have loved now for over 20 years. It took a while to finally release but for those of you that are fans of both Digimon and visual novels, it was well worth the wait.

Digimon Survive presented a beautiful and wonderful story and diverse characters, but when you look at the gameplay style, it was very boring and frustrating and may not suit everyone.

Digimon Survive is still recommended to fans of the franchise and those who enjoy a good story, with the warning that there’s scarce engagment with exploration and a repetitive battle system that tempers enjoyment.

Digimon Survive tells a captivating, dark, and emotional story that kept me wanting to see what would happen next. The focus on being a visual novel first won’t be for everyone as if you value gameplay in your Digimon games you won’t get a ton of that here. I wish the combat was a bit deeper in this game but I still had fun with it and I was always trying to get new Digimon on my side. If you are looking for a bit of a different Digimon experience I highly recommend Digimon Survive.

Digimon Survive really just gets in its own way. Fans of the anime will find it familiar, but will be able to appreciate what the extra layer of violence adds to it. Getting through it is the tougher ask. Dialogue options leading you away from where you want to go (and potentially disconnecting you to the characters), key battles being few and far in between, and asking you to jump back in multiple times despite all of that seems like rubbing salt in the wound for those who already had notable issues.

Digimon Survive is an experiment that is only half successful, as at the time of dosing the narrative component and the role-playing and strategic one of the hybrid, the developers have allocated insufficient space to the second.
