Unfortunately, it's tough to center a game's progression around cosmetics when the skater that's being customized looks so bland. Add to that a limited availability of game modes at launch and Roller Champions gets off to a rough start at the track. Fortunately, the core experience is enjoyable enough that it could feasibly pick up some momentum and score some goals down the road.

As already mentioned, live service games live or die depending on how they are supported, so it is difficult to say if investing time in Roller Champions will be worth it in the long run. The game is solid and feels good to play. The plans for the game's first year sound interesting, with each Season introducing new content revolving around a theme and new quality of life features. Hence, the ball is literally on Ubisoft Montreal's court now. Will they be able to complete their three laps of the arena and score five points? We will just have to wait and see.

Having spent a couple hours with the final release of Roller Champions, it’s definitely a future sports game that’s got some juice to it. It’s reductive to say it’s just Roller Derby Rocket League, but that’s also how it’s going to get people’s attention so it can showcase the kinds of skilful play and team-based gaming that could make it a success. Will it stick around for the long-run? Well, for that we’ll just have to wait and see.

With its free-to-play status, Ubisoft has everything they need to make Roller Champions a resounding success, from beautiful design, an exhilarating concept, and the unique ability to have this stored on your hard drive for months and not fear of it becoming outdated. If it can capture enough of an audience from kick-off, there's no reason that Roller Champions can't become a sporting title that has you and your friends rolling in laughter for years to come.

If you had to pay for Roller Champions, I wouldn’t say “grab two friends and start a match” but it is free and man that makes the difference. While this one is going to rely on patches to fix stability post-launch, there is something there to love.

Roller Champions provides a solid gameplay base, but only time will tell to see how dev support will keep players coming back.

Roller Champions is a mixed bag that is in definite need of some balancing. Under the right circumstances it’s an absolute blast… but take one little bit of that equation away and you’ll be left frustrated.

Roller Champions has got great potential, but it lacks of precise route to realize that potential. The core of the game is good and if played with a team of friends delivers ton of fun, while playing with random teams can be a chaotic and frustrating experience. The matchmaking at the moment is awkward and slow and there's no much content apart 3vs3 matches. Roller Champions is a long shot by Ubisoft, and only support and community will tell us if it will be a Rainbow Six Sieg kind of story, or a sad Hyper Scape reprise.

Roller Champions is a fun game, especially considering that it's a free-to-play, but considering its competitors it doesn't feel unique enough, because of its lack of contents.

Roller Champions loses its momentum too fast, but provides great bursts of genuine fun along the way.

Roller Champions has an impressive, unique core but squanders it with a gameplay loop that gets stale.

Roller Champions has potential, but it actually looks like a very Early Access than a finished game. It almost has no content and its economic system is far from the healthiest on the market. Those who don't want to pay, will have to grind for long hours just top hope to get hair or a less generic character.

There's something satisfying about its derby-style structure and the nuanced tactics that entails. Its rollerblading mechanics are very approachable, yet there's also a deceptive skill ceiling too. But, like skating through a small sand mound, the momentum is lost by the repetition and under-polished features.

Roller Champions does not have the stuff of champions and, net of a gameplay that works and entertains, fails to live up to expectations due to serious shortcomings in terms of content and on the technical / artistic side, due to which the game fails to live up to other successful free to play.

As it stands, Roller Champions doesn't offer much. It certainly has a good foundation with its resolutely arcade gameplay, ultra accessible, simple game rules, but that's it. Content level, we have nothing to put under the tooth.

Roller Champions has potential; the core gimmick and gameplay are both lots of fun and it's satisfying blasting your enemy across the court with a dropkick as they're about to score three points against you. However, it lacks in pretty much every other department and there's just not enough content in here to satisfy anyone. Add in the performance and blurry visual issues on Switch, and we can't really recommend the game on Nintendo's console in its current state. It is free-to-play, so it's worth a try if anything we've mentioned sounds interesting, but unless some serious updates are made to this version, you're definitely best off playing it on a different platform if at all possible.
