If you enjoy grinding numbers, goofy anime antics, and over-the-top style, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance will give you hundreds of hours of replayability. If you don't like the idea of spending hours and hours replaying levels and building up characters, then you might want to look somewhere else.

At its best, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is charming. At its worst, it's very tedious.

There is a staggering amount of content in Disgaea 5, all serving the central, compelling and nuanced gameplay system. It's enough for Disgaea 5 to grip you, and then not let you go for the next several dozen hours.

If you liked previous Disgaea games, you would be right at home with Disgaea 5. The gameplay works, and Nippon Ichi Software should be accommodated for not meddling with what was, and still is, solid. That said, I can see how the same experience could be tiresome for returning players. But if you are a newcomer to the series or still can't get enough Prinnys, give Disgaea 5 a chance. An enjoyable adventure awaits you with gameplay that represents the best of the TRPG genre and characters you will remember, long after the credits role.

Disgaea 5 is not the obvious revolution for the series that its predecessor Disgaea 4 was from a graphical standpoint, but it does feature meaningful evolution of the series' gameplay.

In the end, Disgaea 5 may not have evolved much from its glory days, but the latest entry proves that the tried-and-true mechanics still hold up, even if the aesthetics and characters remain somewhat antiquated. There is no other RPG that features this many options, which will undoubtedly win over the hardcore RPG crowd with far too much time on their hands.

Whilst Disgaea features many unique-looking characters that benefit from a HD makeover, the backgrounds and locations are lacking any real finesse and make the game feel fairly dated

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is an absurdly deep game is definitively the go-to SRPG experience on PS4. It has the whole package – great art, superb music, hilarious story, deep and complex mechanics, and a post-game that will keep you playing for hundreds of hours.

Bigger, crazier and more spectacular than ever, Disgaea 5 doesn't disappoint and continues to be one of my favorite strategy franchises. While the pacing may be a bit slow, it doesn't detract from the overall quality of the game and it's absolutely worth picking up.

So, should you buy Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance? Well, if you're already a fan of the series, I'm sure you knew you were going to purchase this the moment it was announced. However, if you're just getting into strategy RPGs, I'd still recommend Disgaea 1 over this title.

If I was to go in depth on all of this game's mechanics I would literally be here for thousands of words, so suffice it to say that the game has plenty to offer and almost all of it is entertaining. It's a bit of a shame that the story lacks the hilarious premise of its predecessor, but mechanically Disgaea 5 is as solid as they come. I've spent over 60 hours on the game, going through the story and messing around a bit in the different optional worlds, and there is so much more I could do in it. Whether you're looking for a fun 50 hour story, or want something that will have you grinding your nights away for hundreds of hours, Disgaea 5 is a pretty safe bet.

Disgaea 5 fulfils exactly everything desired and expected from a Disgaea title, though, and what more could fans or newcomers to the franchise ask for? Ultimately, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is a great game for any fan of the SRPG genre, and it shows why this franchise is a great entry port into the genre.

This is by far the best Disgaea game we've seen, and it is a strong contender to be the best tactics RPG ever created.

In terms of game mechanics, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is possibly the strongest entry in the franchise. Almost every change it makes is for the better, and the core gameplay has been polished and refined in countless ways. While it lacks big changes, it's an excellent example of the Disgaea gameplay and one of the most accessible entries in the series. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer, there's a lot to like here.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is indeed bigger in every feasible way when compared to previous series iterations. I'm not so sure it's better in every way, though, as the sheer amount of content can feel either muddled or oppressive. There are times when you just sit there, overwhelmed with possibilities and options for your growing party, unsure of what to tackle next.

'Disgaea 5' is one of the best strategy RPGs I've played in years. The gameplay is fun and addicting, and the rest of the package offers more than enough incentive for me to play until the ending and beyond. Not only will series fans find another enjoyable entry, but it's easier than ever for new players to get into 'Disgaea,' with the Cheat Shop making grinding quite easy and most of the extra stuff not being forced upon them. Despite my doubts, 'Disgaea 5' sees the series come to the PS4 with all due grandeur. New player or series veteran, this is a fantastic SRPG that should not be passed up.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance also gives you the ability to dispatch your unused characters on expeditions, so that they don't go to waste while you're away on story missions. It works a little like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's Motherbase dispatch missions; you select a number of your characters and send them off to various planets or stars. Upon their return, they present a battle report to you, which outlines the enemies they defeated and captured as well as the skills and items they gained. It's an interesting metagame that adds an additional layer of depth to the core game.
