Far Cry 4 is well worth a visit, but it's more a backpacker's delight than a five-star island paradise.

And yet, despite all the flaws, Far Cry 4 pounds out an open-world FPS maelstrom of ridiculousness. It's always in your face and it's never afraid to throw numerous and diverse dangers in your path, just to see if you can adapt and survive. There's a distinct sense of power when you make your assault on the criminals of Kyrat and that's something I can get behind.

Far Cry 4 isn't really pushing the franchise forward, but it's a fun and robust entry all on its own.

But is "Far Cry 4" fun? I enjoyed "Far Cry 3," so it's safe to assume that I also enjoyed "Far Cry 4." There just isn't much new here to call it a sequel. "Far Cry 3" was a change in direction from "Far Cry 2." I expected that same innovation from "Far Cry 4," but instead saw more of the same. Kyrat is a wonderfully crafted open world that encourages players to seek out all of its hidden adventures, but the sense of discovery is lost when it feels like the second time around.

Far Cry is a game that you can start up and play for both a short amount of time and for long, gaming sessions. There is just absolutely so much to do in the game. If you are looking for an open world game from a FPS perspective and have yet to try the Far Cry series, you definitely need to check this out.

This is a vast game and as such definitely worth your time and money.

Ultimately Far Cry 4 is a vast and glorified expansion pack to Far Cry 3. If you liked what the previous title offered or have yet to experience it at all, then this is definitely worth a go. That growing Ubisoft problem of over-familiarity rears its ugly head once again, but as it stands the Far Cry series hasn't yet been thoroughly stamped into the ground by yearly iterations. Yet. At its best Far Cry 4 is a ridiculously entertaining prospect, and sometimes you'll be sat there just thinking to yourself, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is gaming", but the story aspect does let the side down a little, failing to draw on the open-world nature that makes the game such a success in the first place.

A worthy purchase certainly, but only if you're prepared to accept Far Cry 3.5 rather than Far Cry 4.

In taking players high into the mountains, Far Cry 4 often reaches even higher and very nearly touches the skies above it — it's only in a few areas that its ambition slightly avoids its grasp. Despite its weaker aspects in story and characters, it keeps players coming back to Kyrat.

Even though its plotline fails to engage and grappling play gets repetitive and boring, Far Cry 4's game-world and multitude of engaging missions and tasks draw you in. There's so much fun stuff to do in Kryat that you could get lost here for some time. Oh, and you can ride an elephant and flip over vehicles with its trunk.

There was heavy skepticism arising when it comes to Ubisoft Montreal being able to top Far Cry 3. Not only was Far Cry 3 a very impressive game with excellent gameplay, it was not even two years ago when it hit store shelves. Despite that, Far Cry 4 tops Far Cry 3 in every single way imaginable. While the story is still not as silly nor as intriguing as it should be, the unpredictable nature of the gameplay continues to leave it as one of the most enjoyable experiences out there. There is a certain magic to riding an elephant, a certain magic that no other game but Far Cry 4 can achieve.

Far Cry 4 has weak characters, but its campaign, co-op, and competitive multiplayer feature incredibly fun freedom.

There are two kinds of people that will play Far Cry 4. Those that will look at it and complain about how similar it is to Far Cry 3 and then there will be those that rejoice in those similarities. That is the simplest approach to this title. There's nothing to make it not an enjoyable experience, but for those that lovedFar Cry 3, for all of its beautiful distractions, will find hours upon hours of glorious gameplay waiting for you. Plus, with a villain like Pagan Min, you just can't go wrong with the latest installment of the Far Cry franchise.

Far Cry 4 will enchant you with its lush forests, scenic vistas, and hostile wildlife but it's the mission and combat variety that will keep you exploring. You're bound to have a few gameplay oddities manifest themselves as Kyrat is a complex, open-world with many moving parts, but load times are rather pleasant and the textures and lighting are impressive. It doesn't take a lot of risks with the Far Cry formula, but once we enlisted we couldn't rest until the people of Kyrat were free of tyranny, and all the icons on the map were checked off.

Ubisoft have shown over the last ten years, with Assassin's Creed and the Far Cry franchise, that if they come up with a good idea they don't mind running with it. Far Cry 4 sticks very closely to the successful formula set out by Far Cry 3. So, if you loved Far Cry 3 you'll love Far Cry 4. However, if you found Far Cry 3 got repetitive, you might get the same feeling with this version.

Far Cry 4 is Far Cry 3 dialled up to eleven, with more animals, activities, missions and abilities. And while throwing more stuff at the player isn't the perfect recipe for success, I was happy to play a richer, larger version of one of my favourite games in recent years.

This game is HUGE. At the end of the day, you are absolutely getting every dollar of value from Far Cry 4, and I'm nowhere close to being bored of it after roughly thirty hours. If you enjoyed Far Cry 3, do yourself a favour and pick up FC4. You will not be disappointed, I assure you.

At its core, this is just a brilliant, well-designed shooter. The weapons feel great, there’s genuine opportunities for creativity, and it all takes place in a dynamic world where random tiger attacks are commonplace.
