With all of its improvements, LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is easily the best LEGO Batman game, but it doesn't quite take the crown for best overall LEGO game. LEGO: The Hobbit is still more impressive as an overall experience, as the sprawling open world seamlessly integrated the story and side-quests in a way that Beyond Gotham can't match. However, Beyond Gotham is most like LEGO Marvel Super Heroes in terms of overall experience, and that's not bad company.

Despite some technical shortcomings, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham does a fine job of continuing to build on what the series has established while also hitting all the right notes to keep pleasing Bat-fans of all ages.

[LEGO games] do have that something special, that makes them so engaging and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is no exception.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is initially the same type of gameplay that you know from the previous LEGO titles, but with a little bit more freedom and flavor added in to separate it. If you loved previous LEGO titles, especially the most recent LEGO Batman titles, then you're going to enjoy this one.

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is the latest installment in the franchise, but even though it fits an easy rhyme scheme I can't claim it's the greatest.

'Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham' is a good Lego experience, but it adds to the franchise only incrementally. The series has been around for nearly a decade and has made great improvements since it began, but needs more innovation to avoid going down the path of burnt-out IPs. Besides the new characters, there is little difference between this game and last year's 'Lego Marvel.' The storyline is also rather short, and can be finished in six or seven hours. Despite that, it is a good time for kids of all ages with co-op and free play continuing as a base for the series' signature charm.

After nearly a dozen releases, the LEGO franchise has found a concept and a set-up that work well, even if it doesn't stretch the limits of gameplay ingenuity. It is for that reason that LEGO Batman 3 serves as a solid entry in the library, but not an exceptional one.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a prime example of TT Games' overuse of its basic formula. Bland stages, and a storyline that starts off slowly, hamper what could've been a much better game. That said, superhero fanatics will still appreciate the premise, locations and inside jokes.

Less Batman, more Green Lantern. This is good.

LEGO Batman 3's irrepressible love for the universe and amazing attention to detail make for an essential DC experience, but the gameplay feels like a step sideways and even backwards for the LEGO series. This was the first time I stopped playing a holiday season LEGO game because I'd had enough, not because I'd collected everything. LEGO Batman 3 will do for now, but it's clear that TT Games needs to start thinking seriously about where to go next.

On many counts this is the best of the Lego super-hero games, with some fantastic missions and a feast of characters and costumes. Yet without an open world to tie it all together it feels like it's missing something at its core, and the pacing in the early missions could be better. It's still a must for fans of the Lego games and DC Comics, but it doesn't pack the super-powered punch of Lego Batman 2 and Lego Marvel Super Heroes.

Lego Batman 3 has all the ingredients of the other, enjoyable, Lego superhero games, but is let down by clunky controls, poor signposting and questionable translations of well-known comic book personalities.

Poor pacing and the worst celebrity voiceovers of the year mar what could have been the definitive Lego game, but in the end is just another fun but shallow co-op game amongst many.

If you're a fan of DC Comics and don't mind the simple gameplay mechanics the Lego series is known for, then Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will give you and your family hours upon hours of enjoyment. It also won't lead you to taking out a second mortgage on your home as you won't need to buy hundreds of physical toys to play the game; but after your kids start playing Lego Batman 3, I'm sure you'll end up buying them Lego toys anyways.

If you're a Batman fan of any age, you'll want to pick up this game. With couch co-op for two, LEGO Batman 3 is a picture-perfect game to play alongside children. It can be a bit slow going at the start, but power through the introductory missions, acquire some suits, and things really start rolling. With a mission count that numbers near 50, and over 150 characters to play as (gotta catch 'em all?), there is a ton of content to bask in. While a lot of the combat and puzzles might feel a bit repetitive, you'll hardly notice as you mete out justice as a tiny version of your favorite hero. LEGO Batman 3 comes highly recommended to kids young and old alike.
