However, those expecting more might be feeling left sucked dry, only to hope this draws up interest for a franchise resurrection.
The Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered feels barebones. You get these titles with a few new bells & whistles and not much else. It is thoroughly disappointing for a game that was in more need of a full gameplay remake than just a graphical uplift. With so many great remaster/collection packages hitting, I wish this one had been given a little more love.

It’s got some interesting ideas and it delivers on some of them, but overall, you’ll probably need nostalgia goggles to get the most out of it.
There is no denying that the Legacy of Kain saga holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, and this remastered package of the Soul Reaver titles serves as a testament to why. Despite the passage of time and the inevitable ageing of certain mechanics, the sheer quality that permeates these two games makes it incredibly easy to overlook the few areas that show their age.

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is an excellent example of how you preserve and reintroduce a dormant, classic franchise to its adoring fanbase and aspiring newcomers. While some of the mechanics and controls feel very dated, the narrative, world-building, voice acting, puzzle and level design, along with the beautifully updated visuals still stand out and have aged just wonderfully. On top of that, a treasure trove of wonders offered in the bonus selection make this a must-buy for fans, including never before snippets of playable levels, concept art, renders and deep dives into the lore and wider universe. A piece of gaming history we’re incredibly glad isn’t being lost to time and hopefully an exciting new chapter for a franchise we love so dearly.
The return to Nosgoth comes with a robust remaster featuring revamped graphics and artwork, new quality-of-life options, but the same classic gameplay. It delivers a unique experience that still impresses today with its narrative and characters.

A modernization project that pays homage to two legendary titles that contributed, in their own way, to the development of the media in new directions. The work of Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics is commendable in preserving the charm and appeal of the original products, although some of the ludic elements may appear, to the contemporary gamer, unpolished. A remastering to be jealously guarded: the story of Nosgoth deserves to be shared, today as well as over two decades ago.

Although the price on Nintendo Switch is somewhat bitter, Legacy of Kain™ Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is a very welcome package for the platform. The experience is practically intact and the lack of new gameplay is compensated by visual improvements, such as texture updates and character remodeling, which leaves the games programmed and even today, two decades after the original releases, still immersive, fun and deep , with mechanics that insist on not being dated or outdated.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered successfully revives a classic, bringing its rich narrative, atmospheric world, and engaging gameplay to modern audiences with improved visuals and performance. While it falls short of being a definitive edition due to missing quality-of-life updates and minor technical issues, it remains a worthy tribute to the originals.
With this remaster bundle, Aspyr offers graphically reworked versions of both games, which can also shine in their original look if desired, as well as a lot of interesting bonus material that you can browse through. Minor adjustments such as a compass, a rudimentary map of the surroundings and slightly revised controls make the game a little more accessible. Unfortunately, however, the game fails to integrate quality-of-life improvements such as a free save system, which I clearly missed during testing. Unfortunately, I had missed the two parts of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for the first PlayStation generations. I never got beyond a few demo levels of the first game. In this respect, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is of course the perfect opportunity for me to experience these games, which are steeped in history. Otherwise, the target group is likely to be primarily connoisseurs of the original or gamers with a penchant for retro gaming. Because the basic gameplay of both titles is actually a little outdated thanks to the many walking paths and the simple combat system, even if the story surrounding Raziel's campaign of revenge against Kain is still very successful and dense. In conclusion, it can be said that Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered revives a popular series that was unfortunately forgotten too soon, but just like the games, it is not perfect. But who knows, maybe the bundle will pave the way for a real remake of Legacy of Kain. Raziel and Kain definitely deserve it.
