Atomfall's best features lie hidden underneath a layer of gameplay that never rises above 'just good enough'. For those who dig deeper, there's a thrilling mystery to be solved, and a level of variety that you'll only truly appreciate on a second playthrough.

Atomfall is a title that will please depending on the player's expectations. In my case, I was looking for an adventure that delivered a campaign rich in exploration, full of secrets and rewards for those willing to scour every corner of Windscale. And in this, the game shines.

If you’ve ever wondered what Fallout in a British village would be like, Atomfall has the answer. Its mix of exploration, survival, tense combat, and Cold War paranoia brings a fresh touch to the genre. However, flawed combat and no fast travel may frustrate many. In the end, Atomfall feels like a "Fallout lite" unlikely to leave a lasting mark.

Atomfall is quite a pleasant surprise and serves almost everything even better than originally expected. The disadvantage may be the relatively small playing area, but it could turn into a big advantage in the end.

If you want a traditional, linear experience with clear goals and objectives, Atomfall probably isn’t what you’re after. It’s very much a player-directed experience – for better and for worse, depending on your perspective. However, if you’re the type who wants a game to give you the freedom to play however you want, then you owe it to yourself to check out Atomfall.

Atomfall is a decent little RPG but it also sports some glaring flaws within its gameplay loop, holding it back from being a fantastic game. The combat and stealth are poor, wildly unbalanced and feature some laughably bad AI. However, the narrative, writing and rewarding open world exploration are really solid, going a long way to balance that scale out. So ultimately, it’s a bit of a mixed bag and a difficult one to score, especially as this is a game you’ll either love or loathe.

Freedom in problem-solving is the main feature of Atomfall, which nonetheless lacks a bit more originality and risk. Despite an interesting world and engaging story, the other elements of the game are not something that will be remembered for long.

Rebellion has built a superb open world and filled it with interesting, layered characters. The freedom you have to tackle things how you see fit is refreshing and kept me gripped throughout my twenty-two hour playtime. Combat could have been more in depth but it services everything else that the game excels in. If you are looking for an intriguing open world that offers you real freedom, I highly recommend checking out Atomfall.

With Atomfall, Rebellion has delivered an exciting survival game with brilliant story hooks and a world you never want to stop exploring.

Rebellion crafts an engaging survival game with Atomfall, though technical issues, weak enemy AI, and clunky melee combat detract from the experience. Freedom takes center stage, pushing players to explore and carve their own path. While not without its flaws, the atmospheric world and satisfying gunplay make it worth the journey.

Atomfall shines by not telling you anything initially and letting you choose who you trust and betray to get to the ending you feel best suits your survivor.

While there were a few things I had to get used to, like the slightly stiff controls, Atomfall is overall a great Sci-fi RPG with a unique story and a great graphical presentation.

Atomfall has a lot of interesting ideas and an admirable disinterest in playing by the usual gaming rules. But there are aspects that feel like an identity crisis, and those moments take up a lot more raw time.

One thing is absolutely for sure: Rebellion has the groundwork for something special here, and a sequel has the potential to be fantastic. I want to come back to this world, to find out what happened after I left it and to see what Rebellion can build on the foundations they laid.

We can confirm it: Atomfall is an ambitious gamble, successfully won by Rebellion. Set against the backdrop of an imaginary quarantine zone inspired by the real Windscale nuclear disaster in northern England, the British developers' new title succeeds in offering an experience somewhere between exploration, survival and action. Above all, it is a hymn to the sense of discovery in all its declinations thanks to a narrative deconstructed in favor of the maximum possible freedom granted to the player. It is a title that knows how to be both unexpectedly ruthless and utterly rewarding, even minus a few technical smears and some mechanics that are perhaps all too punishing. What mysteries will you discover?

The British “Fallout” alternative tells a gripping story, but puts heaps of obstacles in my way when discovering it.

Atomfall, for all its charm, is on the shallow side in terms of gameplay but that doesn’t mean it’s poor. We have been spoiled by intricate systems and high octane games recently. The slower overall pace is welcome and when the dial does go up it more than satisfies. Atomfall is fun and engaging from the first moment. A beautiful, atmospheric adventure awaits you when you boot up the game and it keeps going along pleasantly with each and every choice you make.
