The Alters stands out with a creative and emotionally rich premise, combining base management, exploration and a deep narrative of identity, choices and coexistence. The idea of interacting with alternative versions of oneself is original and well explored both in terms of mechanics and plot, highlighting an interesting balance between constant pressure, strategic decisions and moments of introspection, which enriches the gaming experience. The proposal is ambitious, well executed and offers a type of engagement that is rare in games of this genre.

If there's one thing Poles are really good at, it's video game development. This is confirmed once again by the 11 bit studios team. After Frostpunk, they bring another great title in which you clone yourself, manage a base, explore and fight for survival on an inhospitable planet.

The Alters by Polish developer 11 Bit Studios once again showcases their talent for blending complex gameplay mechanics with a thoughtfully crafted narrative and mature themes. The decision to make the protagonist's clones into fully realized alter egos - each with distinct personalities, backgrounds, and ambitions - adds meaningful depth to this unique survival-management experience. While the interface can feel a bit unwieldy, and the gameplay loops may become repetitive with an uneven difficulty curve, these issues don't detract from the game's compelling story, immersive atmosphere, and solid visual design.

11 Bit Studios delivers its best project to date with The Alters. Become the humble builder Jan Dolski and survive on an extreme planet while fleeing the dawn. Exploration, action, decisions, management, and strategy are the keys to a title that cleverly blends various components, giving the experience a very original touch. Play with the fabric of time, manipulate the universe at quantum levels, and perform scientific magic as you try to keep your crew alive and return home safely

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with The Alters, especially thanks to its blend of gameplay styles and variety of mysteries throughout. If you relate to the protagonist then it'll be a much better experience for you but keep in mind that not everyone will. 👨‍🚀

The Alters isn’t a game that rewards you with instant gratification or an adrenaline rush. Instead, it slowly and quietly draws you into an intimate drama about human fragility, unfulfilled potential, and the weight of the decisions that shape our lives. It’s a mirror that shows who we’ve become and who we could have been if we’d chosen differently back then. Patience and a willingness to listen to the dialogues are essential for those who aren’t afraid to think ahead, make difficult decisions, and face their consequences.

Exploration could have stood to have a little more in the way of discovery, but that doesn’t change the fact that these barren areas are well designed and enjoyable. The constant stream of additional tasks to complete, both the personal ones for the crew and the ones added as you run across strange planetary anomalies, constantly diversifies what is asked of you and keeps the experience fresh.

THE ALTERS is an ambitious and decidedly successful project. It has its flaws, but also a beating heart, a rare intelligence and an ability to make people think that goes far beyond its genre alone.

The Alters is a science fiction survival drama that combines resource management with a profound existential exploration of identity and choices. It talks about the decisions we make and those we didn't have the courage to make. And despite the monotony of its exploration sections, it's a very enjoyable and replayable experience thanks to the combinations we can make with the Alters and the four possible endings.

The Alters is definitely one of the most pleasant surprises of 2025. 11 bit studios brings to the stage an odyssey of space survival, mixing genres and drawing inspiration from some of the best sci-fi films of recent years. An original script and a playful formula that skilfully blends survival, adventure and strategy give life to a title that will remain etched in your memory for a long time to come. Bit 11 delivers a compelling sci-fi survival experience in The Alters, with strong narrative pacing, deep character connections, and atmospheric world-building that builds toward a uniquely epic conclusion, though a rushed ending and minor technical issues prevent it from reaching its full potential. Still, a well-crafted and memorable journey.
