Monster Train 2 looks just like the original, but it's not: it takes the playable base of the original and elevates it in a way I didn't expect, with new clans, synergies, new cards with a great impact and several mechanics that update the formula. The result is a funnier, crazier and more visceral game that ranks among the best of the genre. It's a vice.

Where the original Monster Train laid a solid foundation for the series, Monster Train 2 expands on the formula in every single way possible. With an absurd amount of content that will likely see your train hurtling through Heaven and Hell for hundreds of hours, it’s no exaggeration to say this might just be one of the most replayable roguelikes ever made. If you’re a sucker for deck-builders that reward repeated playthroughs, you would be foolish not to take a ride on this Monster Train.

Monster Train 2 goes straight on the right track: the sequel to Shiny Shoes' deckbuilder improves on the previous game in every way, without wanting to reinvent the wheel at all costs. The formula is a winner, and the synergies between clans, cards and artefacts are fun and never make us feel like slaves to the RNG. And now on with a new run!

Monster Train 2 is a very fun roguelite. It manages to balance the genre with elements from tower defense games and deckbuilders while still being cohesive. The story, while simple, is engaging and has its own unique flair compared to similar titles. Plus, the moment-to-moment gameplay is exciting and filled with numerous opportunities to experiment with different playstyles. While the game might be a bit daunting due to its difficulty and lack of accessibility for newcomers, if you're a fan of roguelites, deckbuilders, or tower defense games, then this is the game for you.

Monster Train 2 is a quick to get into roguelike deck builder that plays into the tired genre’s strengths and still manages to provide a worthwhile time for those who buy into it.

Monster Train 2 doesn’t just earn its place in the crowded roguelike deckbuilder genre—it sets a new bar. From the intense, multi-layered combat to the unforgettable art and music, every part of the game feels purposeful and polished. It’s rare to find a sequel that not only stands alone but also pushes the genre forward in such a confident, satisfying way.

Monster Train 2 delivers a smart, wildly creative, and compulsively replayable roguelike deckbuilder that builds meaningfully on its predecessor. The mechanics—particularly its verticality, floor-based strategy, and layered factions—make for exhilarating and varied runs. The writing’s energy reflects how fun the game is in motion, with just a few complexities that may slightly overwhelm newcomers. But for fans of roguelikes and deckbuilders, this is a masterclass in chaos and cohesion.

If you're not really a fan of deckbuilders, this game is not going to change your mind. But if you like them but often find them kind of disappointing, I think Monster Train 2 is going to be a real winner. It doesn't do anything I've never seen before, but all the things it does that I have seen before are things it does really well. And that's worthy of praise.

Monster Train 2 is a solid sequel that expands on the original’s mechanics with new features like equipment cards, train cores, and extra game modes, adding tactical variety without overhauling the core formula. The combat remains engaging and strategic, emphasizing card management, positioning, and synergies. However, the game’s steep difficulty and reliance on advanced mechanics may deter casual players. While offering a robust experience for dedicated fans, it often feels more like an ambitious expansion than a true evolution of the series.

I’m writing this right now while thinking about what I’m going to do in my next run and how long it’ll be until I can play Monster Train 2 again. I don’t know that I can give a game a better endorsement than that.

“Monster Train 2”, much like the original, has its grips on me and I don’t see it going away any time soon. I decided to “check something” before I turned in this review, I ended up playing three hours without even noticing. As I like to say, we are so back, deckbuilding fans.

Monster Train 2 meets if not exceeds the bar that they had previously set with the initial Monster Train. For newcomers, perhaps it will feel like option overload even if you choose the easier play style. So for those who need a bit more of an entry point, be patient. For those who want an excellent roguelike experience and hundreds if not thousands of hours, Monster Train 2 is for you.

Monster Train 2 is excellent. It takes everything I loved about the first game and makes it just a little better. The looks, music, and strategy will have me playing this one for years to come.
