Being divorced from the Elder Scrolls and being able to do its own thing elevates Tainted Grail. It has more personality than being a generic medieval Tolkien-esque fantasy and combines elements from real-world history and myth to realize its twisted vision.

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon delivers an atmospheric open-world RPG inspired by Arthurian legends, combining elements of Skyrim and Kingdom Come with a darker tone. It features smart exploration, a flexible skill-based progression system, and a richly detailed world. However, inconsistent quality across performance, UI design, and unbalanced combat holds the experience back.

With a free exploration that works and a combat system that takes the best of the genre, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a new step in the western RPG. The Arthurian myth serves as the basis for a lore riddled with legends, fantastic creatures and mythical characters that merge with the story to create something with its own personality. Large areas to travel through, solid mechanics and unforgettable moments that take all the good things from the board game to create a title that, despite its budget problems, manages to shine within the current catalog.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a compelling, atmospheric RPG that punches above its weight in narrative ambition and gameplay depth. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 5 port of the game suffers from some extremely rough technical edges and UI frustrations, and needs a lot more time to bake in the oven. That being said, the game’s dark storytelling, rewarding exploration, and flexible combat might make it a worthwhile experience.
