Hardcore fans may be divided about The Phantom Pain, but there is no doubt that this might very well be this generation's defining game.
Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain is an interactive piece of art that truly pays homage to the original game and successfully expands the franchise into an open-world game. The gaming mechanics are flawless as are the beautiful graphics that go hand in hand with the gameplay and audio. Game of the Year hey? Well… it's a close fight between this title and the Witcher III and given there are only a few months left, I sincerely doubt another game will come close.
It's a shame that this will be Kojima's last MGS game, but for what it's worth he set aside whatever ill feelings he might have against Konami to create one of his most ambitious games yet. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the best entry in the franchise, and you should enjoy it while the franchise still has a solid reputation. Thanks to the open-world gameplay, Kojima has given you dozens of hours to remember him and his work.

Yes stealth games aren't for everyone, but The Phantom Pain is so much more than a stealth game. What you are getting with Metal Gear Solid V is hours upon hours of the vision of one of the most creative and artistic directors in video game history.
Simply put, there is no better stealth-action gameplay system than the one within The Phantom Pain, and no better game as of yet in 2015.
Playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was difficult. Perhaps this is the most complicated review I have ever done. The game carries so much sense for the franchise and the industry that it is impossible to be indifferent to external factors. Still, it feels like the franchise has always aspired to be this installment: in each mission, a deep and complex infiltration puzzle; in each boss, a challenge; in each enemy, the opportunity to strengthen yourself; in each shot, hope; in every word, almost 30 years of relentless creativity. This game is massive, complex, challenging, deep, ambitious, innovative. More than a simple video game, it is a life of devotion to a discipline.

It's been a long wait for the latest Metal Gear Solid instalment, but wait no more. Sadly this seems to be the last masterpiece of the beloved franchise created by Hideo Kojima; thankfully however it's going out with a bang! Or a silent "pop" if you take the stealth approach, the choice is yours.
The Phantom pain is the Divine Comedy of video games, the best infiltration adventure ever made and GOTY 2015. A true masterpiece and a perfect send-off to the man who sold the world: Hideo Kojima.

While the game has it's flaws for someone who is a major fan of the Metal Gear lore, it is an incredible offering that gives so much power to the player and encourages creativity on how you complete the goals presented to you. There is so much attention to detail in this game and it is apparent that Kojima, along with his staff, put all of their time and effort into crafting this masterpiece.

Ultimately, the story isn't the thing in MGSV, or at least not the one that Kojima wrote like a funhouse for you to weave your way through. No, the real story is the one you make yourself as you play through each mission, making new decisions each time and writing an action thriller of your own making. That's what makes Metal Gear Solid V brilliant, and that's why people will still be talking about it years from now.
The Phantom Pain strays from the formula to perfect a new one, offering the best in open-world emergent gameplay we've seen this generation. While the story sometimes falters under expectations, the characters, aesthetic, and polish of this game set it apart as one of the year's best. Thank you Kojima, for one last Metal Gear Masterpiece.
