A safe, dull reimagining of what Battlefield once was, rather a bold reinvention of what it could be.

Battlefield 6 delivers a thrilling multiplayer reset and a decent, if derivative single-player. But it still displays nagging doubts about what makes Battlefield special.

Battlefield 6 is an explosive FPS with adrenaline-fueled multiplayer that is truly Battlefield at its best.

I’ve had such a good time learning the maps, mastering weapons, and discovering quirks of Battlefield 6, and I can’t wait to see how the live-service model rolls out over the next few months. Battlefield 6 is a brilliant time, and one that, for the first time in almost a decade, has a serious chance of rivaling Call of Duty.

Battlefield 6 plays it safe but marks a return to form for the long-running series, delivering chaotic, large-scale multiplayer that's as familiar as it is uproariously fun

As it is right now, with the quality and quantity of content in the launch package of Battlefield 6, it is incredibly easy to recommend the game to anyone who enjoys multiplayer shooters. It’s an especially exciting proposition for those of us who just cannot keep up with Call of Duty’s rollerskates-based movement and its instantaneous time-to-kill. There’s finally a compelling middle ground between the indecipherability of tactical shooters and the yearly slop of CoD, and it’s one you won’t have to convince yourself to play simply because it’s there, you’ll do it with a big grin on your face because of how fun it is.

Battlefield 6 manages to save the series by bringing back a multiplayer mode reminiscent of the best installments. However, there's still work to be done. Some features are missing, and the campaign is severely underutilized. Fortunately, the foundation is in place for Portal and future seasons to round out a game with a future.

For a good war shooter to be truly exceptional, it needs to be fun but also have a great setting and atmosphere to create that authentic war feeling. Battlefield 6 achieves both, making it possibly the best war FPS of the decade and promising endless fun for its players in the coming months — or perhaps even years.

Battlefield 6 is a return to form for the large scale shooter, with a great blend of infantry classes, mechanised warfare, some clever new game modes, and without too much nonsense wrapped around it. It's a true successor to Battlefield 4, right down to the naff campaign.

Battlefield 6 is a spectacle with jaw dropping visuals and sublime audio, while delivering their best multiplayer offering in many years. However, despite it being predominantly a multiplayer experience, its campaign plays it far too safe, and feels all too familiar.

Battlefield 6 is an incredibly strong return to form for the series, with a multiplayer experience that is finely tuned with huge potential for what it could build into, destruction mechanics that bring a level of immersion back to the series that it was missing, and a more than solid visual and sound design package tying up how endlessly fun it is to play. The single-player campaign fails to impress, but the multiplayer experience more than makes up for it.

Battlefield 6 isn't worth buying for its campaign alone - although we suspect no one's really doing that anyway. For us, it's a nice starter while we're waiting for the main meal. It showcases how great the gunplay feels and how nice the game looks as a whole. But it's not breaking any boundaries from a narrative, mechanical, or immersive perspective. Did we enjoy our time with it? Yes, in a turn your brain off kind of way. Will we remember it by the time we're deep in the trenches of the multiplayer? Probably not. But, as mentioned, this is only a part of the Battlefield 6 experience. Once servers go live with real players, and we get some serious sessions out in the field, we'll update our review and score the game accordingly.

What can I say, Battlefield 6 feels like a return to form for one of gaming’s most diverse and explosive first-person shooters. The team delivered a gripping campaign full of political intrigue, great characters and enough “only in Battlefield” moments to last us until the next one. But for me, its strongest asset is its multiplayer, low map count aside there are modes here to tickle any shooters fancy. I loved this game so much, in my last match before getting off to write this review I just had the biggest grin on my face as I turn a failed helicopter flight into a parachute landing and a quad kill AND point capture. Only in Battlefield, indeed.

As much fun as I've had with the multiplayer so far, I haven't had much fun with the campaign. I'm aware that they have even less weight in Battlefield than in, say, Call of Duty. But that's no excuse for what was delivered there.

We would have appreciated a more refined campaign in many ways, but that still doesn't overshadow the exceptional work done by the collective known as Battlefield Studios on the multiplayer front. Battlefield 6 is one of the most entertaining shooters of recent years and marks the return of the franchise in style. The class system, destructible environments, and wide range of maps and modes provide an extraordinary foundation for what's to come, considering that the plans for post-launch support are already well-defined and suggest the developers' desire to keep players engaged over time. Now all that's left is to get our hands on the highly anticipated Portal and learn more about the much-discussed Battle Royale mode, which we hope will arrive soon to make the offering even richer and more varied.

I returned to Battlefield with curiosity... and I'm staying because I had a blast . If you had any doubts, there's plenty of firepower here for a while. And if the series is in your blood, prepare yourself: when the net closes and everyone fights for the last two points, that spark that only Battlefield can ignite returns.

A host of minor and major improvements add up to make Battlefield 6 the smoothest, most bombastically entertaining entry in the series to date. A lacklustre campaign aside, this is a triumphant return and a must-play for both BF veterans and newcomers alike.
