It’s been a while since Marvel took another serious shot at the fighting game genre, and handing the reins to Arc System Works initially seemed like an interesting pairing. As it turns out, it simply works. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls manages to be approachable enough that newcomers can start throwing out spectacular attacks within minutes, while its 4v4 system hides an impressive amount of depth for those willing to put in the time. Combine that with a varied roster, gorgeous anime-inspired presentation and a clear affection for the Marvel Universe, and both fighting game enthusiasts and Marvel fans should find plenty to enjoy here.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has everything it takes to become one of the best fighting games of recent years, capable of filling the void left by Dragon Ball FighterZ and, more importantly, Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls surrounds its 4v4 team battles with story content, training tools, alternate modes, and online play. Its biggest strength is how quickly the combat becomes understandable before assists, team building, and traditional commands add more to learn. Full-team fights can become harder to follow, and I would've liked more stages. If you want a Marvel fighter that lets you start having fun quickly and then rewards the time you spend learning a four-character squad, this is a great one to dig into.

With a highly creative roster and phenomenal visual flair, Tokon delivers a deeply satisfying fighting game experience. Arc System Works introduces clever tweaks to the tag-fighter formula, offering great and strategic depth without demanding grueling execution. It's a fantastic Marvel brawler that just needs its netcode ironed out.

After a few hours of gameplay, we can say that Arc System Works has succeeded in delivering a product of exceptional quality, with great attention to detail in both gameplay and visual design. The single-player mode could have been expanded a bit further, but in fighting games, these modes are often secondary to matches with friends or online multiplayer. But what makes Marvel Tōkon memorable—beyond its combat—is precisely its unmistakable visual style, which blends Eastern and Western influences, Marvel comics, and anime aesthetics. These are two sides of the same coin—contemporary pop culture—which has been fueling the passions of generations around the world for decades. Marvel Tōkon pulls off this combination with remarkable ease, while also succeeding in creating a fighting game that speaks the same language to both newcomers and veterans of the genre.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls isn’t the next MvC, and that’s okay. It’s doing its own thing, and it’s doing it pretty damn well. There’s a lot to love with what ArcSys is doing with Marvel Tokon, and I can’t wait to see how the game evolves from here.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls succeeds in its bet: to offer a 1v1 fighting game disguised as 4v4 with deep mechanics, but accessible enough to please all audiences. Arc System Works has been able to take advantage of their previous projects to offer a solid experience. Only downside, a roster that may seem light given the number of fighters on the floor, but will be strengthened over the months and DLCs already planned.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls comes pretty close to hitting the bullseye for me. It is absolutely stunning from an audiovisual standpoint, while its story mode is also top-notch in terms of both writing and style, despite its repetition in different episodes. Its mechanics are engaging and fun, but the game is also fairly complex and consequently rather frantic – fortunately, there are plenty of incentives to learn its intricacies. And no, this certainly isn’t Marvel vs. Capcom, but then again, it doesn’t need to be.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is, without a doubt, the best treatment a Marvel-based game has ever received. It successfully combines an accessible combat system that is easy to learn with genuine depth for players who want to master it, while also delivering an excellent variety of game modes and a strong launch roster.

Arc System Works nailed Tokon and showed once again why they are one of the best in the genre. While it’s too soon to know if this game will perfectly fill the tag team Marvel void in the fighting game community, it launched with a respectable package perfect for everyone.

The potential of the title packaged by Arc System Works, however, is indisputable : it has everything it needs to establish itself on the competitive scene, but also to simply remain a reference fighting game for less experienced players who simply want to have fun with their favorite characters in a title with extremely high production values that, above all else, respects and honors its origins.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is an accessible and highly entertaining fighting game. While its launch roster feels a bit limited and seems poised to rely heavily on paid content, its gameplay and impressive visual presentation make it a thoroughly enjoyable title for fans of the genre.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls really took me by surprise. The anime style is stunning, the Marvel characters are brilliantly rendered, and technically the game runs exceptionally smoothly. Even when the screen descends into utter chaos with attacks, assists and combos, everything stays neatly in place. The accessible combat is also a major asset. You don’t need to be a fighting game expert to enjoy it straight away, whilst there seems to be plenty of scope to develop your skills further. The short Episode mode is undoubtedly a downside. An hour and a half is simply not enough. Whether the game remains engaging in the long term will depend mainly on the online community and how deeply players can delve into the combat.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls really doesn't make it easy for me to rate it. So many design choices are questionably poor, and the online mode is terrible. The whole game is brimming with wasted potential, … but otherwise, it's really good. It's fun, it has great characters, outstanding presentation, nice modes, and even the story is good.
