The story mode, while not topnotch and limited in roster, offers enough to flesh out different characters’ motivation and background. In a world where Street Fighter 6 and Tekken cater to its loyal fanbase, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls approach is both admirable and welcoming to both new and competitive fighters.

It’s rare when a fighting game manages to tick virtually every box, from excellent fighting mechanics to fantastic teaching tools to a worthwhile story mode and beyond, but Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls comes about as close as a game has gotten since Street Fighter 6.
Its gorgeous style, incredible roster, and genuine evolution of the tag-fighting genre make me confident in finally being able to crown 2026's best fighting game.

A fighting game's impact is difficult to determine at launch due to balancing updates and the community's approach to it. Given the package Arc has delivered here, though, Marvel Tōkon is a more than worthy successor to Marvel vs. Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ. I believe it has the potential to become a fighting game mainstay for years to come.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls feels like a homecoming. Marvel heroes and villains are once again beating each other up in tag-based battles, and I am loving the experience of jumping in and figuring out new strategies. Rather than lean on old tropes, Arc System Works elected to put its own spin on the idea, and what they’ve cooked up sets a new bar for future tag fighters.

A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage.
Arc System Works has delivered a game that respects Marvel's legacy in the genre while daring to establish its own rules, supported by stunning visuals, a delightful story mode, and a well-balanced entry point to competitive play. The on-screen chaos and a somewhat underdeveloped roster are the only shortcomings of an otherwise excellent title.

An impressive start to a new fighting game franchise, that has a few rough edges but also plenty of new ideas and some gorgeous animation for its varied roster of superheroes and villains.
This is not how any of us expected Marvel fighting games to come back, but I sure am glad it happened this way.
Above all, Tokon is the culmination of ASW's vast experience in the genre, thanks to a meticulously refined formula. And it achieves the impossible: satisfying hardcore fighting game fans while simultaneously breaking down the barriers that distance the genre from less experienced players .
