Even though I was sceptical at the beginning, Splatoon Raiders successfully strips away the competitive multiplayer, and succeeds as a phenomenally addictive single-player looter-shooter experience. An incredibly satisfying gameplay loop, familiar gunplay, fluid mechanics, and deep build customisation make it a brilliant new direction for the franchise.

Splatoon: Raiders is a bold and entertaining experiment that transforms the series’ familiar formula into a loot-driven action game with excellent shooting, satisfying weapons, strong enemy design and plenty of build experimentation. Unfortunately, repetitive environments, a weak story, overpowered abilities and a shallow endgame gradually undermine the core Splatoon identity, making it feel more like an enjoyable side experiment than a true successor to Salmon Run.

While the core gameplay loop can sometimes become tedious, the weapon and enemy variety paired in with Splatoon’s signature movement makes for incredibly intense horde survival battles. I firmly believe that this is the best Splatoon title since the very first. It’s got degrees of complexity and madness that the most hardened minmaxer can appreciate, but it’s also crazy approachable in presentation, explanation and fun. It lets you focus on what you want: what weapons, how your base looks, your fashion and your burgeoning relationship with Shiver. This becomes your game. And, as such, it’s easily one of my favorites of the year.
Splatoon Raiders, for the most part, does what it sets out to do. Whether it will be a successful entry point for players who want to start inking everything in sight, I cannot say, but it should be. There is an interesting experience in here, collecting long-forgotten treasures and bursting Salmonids. This is also a great game to play with friends, which you really need. The issue is the game never grabbed me the way I was hoping it would. Some points were downright frustrating, and not in a challenging way.
Splatoon Raiders successfully reinvents the series with rewarding cooperative gameplay, satisfying progression, and excellent performance. Repetitive environments, limited incentive to experiment with its broader toolkit, and a weak narrative prevent it from reaching the creativity and variety of the mainline games.
