Wielding a whip, discovering hidden mana and health upgrades, and exploring vast Gothic structures are all part of Castlevania’s DNA, and Belmont’s Curse faithfully preserves these elements. Longtime fans will feel right at home, while new additions demonstrate how the developers have learned from their previous projects and other games in the genre. After years with few major releases beyond mobile gacha games and projects in other media, this marks an excellent return for the series on consoles. Even 40 years after its debut, Castlevania still has plenty of potential to deliver outstanding gaming experiences.

I enjoyed almost all of my time with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The art, music, and story kept me immersed throughout my playthrough. While I was a little skeptical about combat due to the trailers I’d seen making it look more like a 2D Soulslike, the game handles it well. Instead of the departure I expected the combat to be, the fighting felt more diverse and fast-paced while still straightforward enough for a Castlevania game.
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse feels like a love letter to a beloved series, while also managing to maintain its own distinct identity. Great platforming elements, fun and snappy combat and some great nods from the games of the past, this is a game that's incredibly easy to recommend!
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a romp through a ravaged Paris beset by monsters and led in narrative by the threat of the great Dracula. With excellent art design, challenging platforming and tough bosses, all of the ingredients are here for this Metroidvania. Does it stand against the best? I believe if there was as much content as say a Silksong, potentially. The combat is a blast and the options really provide options. Any chance of remaking the old ones, too? I’d be there day one.
After 18 years, a genre pioneer returns with rewarding exploration, engaging combat, and a compelling story. Yet punishing platforming and shallow progression hold it back. A fine Metroidvania, but one that has lost some of its distinct Castlevania identity.

With challenging combat, rewarding exploration, memorable boss fights, and an excellent soundtrack, the game honors the series' legacy while carving out its own identity. Evil Empire delivers an engaging metroidvania packed with content and personality, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. One of the standout games of 2026, it shows that Castlevania still has plenty to offer.

While some issues do hold it back from its true potential though, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse still feels like a bloody great time that’ll at least leave you pleased with its taste, if not ecstatic.
While it has the essential elements of the Castlevania series, and a great mix of weapons and exploration, its tuning and Switch performance could have used more refinement
By the end, Castlevania: Belmont's Curse leaves you feeling that the series is in good hands. Combat, traversal, puzzles, characters, and visuals all work well on their own and even better together. The tarot system acts as the glue, turning signposting, lore, spells, and dialogue into one connected loop.
The Castlevania franchise has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years with the success of the two animated series on Netflix and various older games being made available on modern platforms, so it’s exciting to see what’s in store in its future. Rose Belmont is a solid new protagonist, and Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is an epic new entry in Konami’s long-running series.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse delivers a strong return to classic 2D action, with satisfying combat, striking gothic visuals, and an excellent soundtrack. While its exploration and platforming play things relatively safe, it remains a highly enjoyable adventure for fans of the series.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse makes a triumphant return with an entry that grips you from the start and refuses to let go until the credits roll, where every single enemy encounter is an absolute joy to experience.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse provides satisfying combat and rewarding exploration but is marred by inconsistent movement, repetitive enemies, and a forgettable soundtrack.
Belmont’s Curse is the Castlevania we’ve been waiting for: fluid whip combat, bosses that push you to the limit, and a castle that feels like the real thing.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a smart modern refresh of the Metroidvania design, taking modern mechanics, fluidity and speed and pairing that with a traditional Castlevania adventure that fits into a popular part of the timeline.
Even when Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse had me in Bloody Tears and praying for mercy, I never stopped grinning from ear to ear and jumping right back in to see what else was hiding in Dracula’s Castle.
Belmont’s Curse isn’t just the game that Castlevania needed, but easily one of the best ones in the franchise.
A unique action-platformer for both longtime Castlevania fans and those looking to dive into the series for the first time. This is a game that we highly recommend not just within the series, but within the platformer genre as a whole.
