The experiment of imagining how an old-school Final Fantasy might evolve has been a success. Square Enix took the mobile game Brave Exvius and, from its ashes, built a title that revives a narrative formula faithful to the traditions of the past, with well-developed characters and good plot twists, even if it doesn't offer anything truly original. At the same time, it recreates an entire world to explore, just like in the JRPGs of yesteryear: in some cases, it does so perhaps a bit hastily, but the overall result is truly excellent, thanks above all to one of the best implementations of HD-2D graphics ever seen.

The mix of new and old in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE makes for an engaging story with a visceral battle system and a world that's a joy to explore. However, I wish the visions mechanic was more central to the game and its writing can be eye-rolling at parts. 🔼

It's a gorgeous, affectionate celebration of a style of RPG that has lost none of its appeal, combined with a remarkably generous reimagining of a mobile game that deserved to be remembered for more than its gacha mechanics.

Final Fantasy Resonance isn’t a game that reinvents the series, but nor does it need to. The combination of nostalgic pixel art, 3D backgrounds, smooth turn-based combat and the Vision system results in an adventure that’s, above all, a real pleasure to play. The downside is that the story takes few risks and the gameplay rarely surprises. Nevertheless, with its charming presentation, strong soundtrack and loads of fan service, Resonance effortlessly puts a smile on my face. Those expecting innovation may sometimes be left wanting. But anyone simply looking for a lovely classic Final Fantasy will find a tasty meal here, topped with extra Chocobo sauce.

Final Fantasy Resonance returns to the franchise's roots with a turn-based RPG that combines strategic combat, exploration, and extensive customization options. The HD-2D visuals, soundtrack, and Stagger and Visions systems enrich an adventure that rewards careful planning and experimentation with different builds. Despite its slower pace and occasional difficulty imbalances, the game offers a solid experience with dozens of hours of content and mechanics that capture the essence of traditional Japanese RPGs.

A stunning HD-2D adventure that proves Final Fantasy magic is alive and well. As someone who had never really found the right place to begin with Final Fantasy, Resonance proved to be a wonderful introduction to the series. Its memorable characters, engaging combat, stunning visuals and incredible soundtrack kept me invested from beginning to end, making this an adventure I won’t forget anytime soon. In fact, after finishing Resonance, I find myself wanting to explore more of what the Final Fantasy series has to offer, which may be the biggest compliment I can give it.

I think Final Fantasy Resonance is a fine game, fun even, and a wonderful celebration of the franchise. The whole thing feels like a love letter to both the series as a whole and to fans of the oldest games, especially. It’s just in service of a format that isn’t really for me, and that’s okay. The game doesn’t try to shy away from its turn-based JRPG roots but instead embraces them, attempting to present the best version of those old systems as they could. Ironically, I feel like the Resonance design has a potential future in itself for combat systems that aren’t this, and that has me more excited than anything else. It feels weird to say but I like Resonance more for the potential it represents than the celebration that it is. Still, if you’re a lifelong or diehard fan of the series, there’s a lot here to love and I’d still recommend it.

Final Fantasy Resonance recaptures the fantasy of classic RPGs in an adventure filled with crystals, friendships, and turn-based combat. While the HD-2D visuals impress during action sequences, a predictable narrative and some drawn-out battles hold the experience back.

Final Fantasy Resonance turns a failed gacha into a solid RPG, with great combat and charm, even if its story mostly repeats Brave Exvius beats.

HD-2D gives Final Fantasy Resonance the old-school charm I’ve wanted to see from the series, while its Vision system and stagger-based combat add welcome depth to familiar turn-based battles. The story is fairly forgettable, but the adventure itself makes a convincing case for more classic-style Final Fantasy games.

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is a pleasant surprise that captures the best elements of the franchise, delivering an engaging RPG with strategic, enjoyable combat, deep customization, and plenty of opportunities to experiment with Visions and Espers. Its beautiful pixel art, rewarding exploration, side quests, and hidden secrets kept me invested for over 50 hours, despite some predictable plot twists, repetitive late-game battles, occasional performance issues, and the lack of Brazilian Portuguese localization. More than a nostalgic tribute, RESONANCE offers a complete RPG experience filled with memorable references, satisfying mechanics, and plenty of content for both longtime fans and newcomers. Ultimately, it is not just a gift to fans, but a great FINAL FANTASY in its own right.

Resonance looks at elements that Final Fantasy abandoned or modified over the past few decades and asks what would happen if they were simply produced again with modern technology, budget, and expertise. The answer is an extraordinarily well-executed traditional JRPG. I missed picking four characters, looking at a turn order, and spending a few seconds thinking before taking action. I missed coming across a new town, chatting with residents, buying equipment, and heading out to wander across the overworld map. I missed that feeling of getting an airship and realizing that previously inaccessible places were suddenly part of my route. Resonance gives all of that back.

Final Fantasy Resonance is an incredible reimagining of a beloved mobile game. While some parts can be frustrating, it’s not enough to diminish the overall stellar experience, and it’s easy to recommend to Final Fantasy and retro JRPG fans.

Final Fantasy Resonance is a title that could very well reshape the series going forward, if enough people get behind it. The turn-based combat is fantastic, and while the Vision system could use a bit of a refresh, it celebrates the legacy of this storied franchise in remarkable ways. Rain's adventure is one that is typical of the series, but the attention given to every single character here does elevate that typical story to new heights.

Final Fantasy Resonance might not be a true HD-2D game, but makes up for that by delivering in almost every other way. A good story, great characters, music, quests, and a fantastic combat system make this a Final Fantasy you need to play.
