The Alters: Last Variable builds on the base game with new mechanics, a new story, and more, but it doesn't always make the most of its innovations on the original.
The Alters: Last Variable is a mostly positive return for the Jan clan that adds complexity to the core gameplay but removes depth and character from the story.
Jan Scientist proves as compelling a character as ever, and his specialized Alters are more than a match in terms of charisma. Cryo-sleep adds a unique twist to long-term decision-making. Sharp writing and presentation, just like the base game.
It isn't an essential DLC; it doesn't bring anything fundamental to the universe. But if you want to spend some extra time with Jan ' or rather, the Jans ' this offers the opportunity, along with a decent new story and some minor additions for research, crafting, and exploration.

The Last Variable is the kind of expansion that directly engages with the best elements of the base game while also innovating. It respects what came before, changes the structure without altering the core experience, and delivers a story that expands the meaning of Jan Dolski and his variations.

The Alters: Last Variable is one of the clearest examples of an expansion made "for fans." It takes advantage of and expands on virtually all the mechanics presented in the base game, deepens the themes, and evolves them with new approaches. It's a mature, intentionally slow-paced experience and a gift for those who fell in love with 11 bit studios' survival system.

The Alters: Last Variable offers a surprisingly substantial campaign that can easily last close to twenty hours if you take your time exploring every system and storyline. If you already enjoyed The Alters, this expansion is absolutely worth adding to your collection. It opens up the world, it strengthens the story, and delivers one of the more thoughtful sci-fi tales you're likely to see this year.
One of The Alters' greatest strengths was leaving important questions unanswered even after the credits rolled. Last Variable builds directly on that idea by turning one of the possible endings from the main campaign into a brand-new story, following the scientist Jan, who chose to remain on the planet while the others managed to escape. The expansion can be started independently from the base game and even includes a recap of previous events to help newcomers understand the context, although being familiar with The Alters' mechanics and universe makes the experience considerably more rewarding. Rather than repeating the structure of the original campaign, the DLC completely shifts its perspective. Survival remains important, but it now shares the spotlight with a much deeper investigation into the planet's mysteries, the consequences of past decisions, and the fate of a Jan who spent years living with what the others left behind. The result is an expansion that meaningfully expands the universe created by 11 bit studios without feeling like simple bonus content, establishing its own identity through stronger character development, new mechanics, and, above all, its narrative.
The Alters: Last Variable brings the story of Jan and his copies to an emotional conclusion, thanks to powerful character interactions and a gameplay loop that make it possible to overlook some of the more frustrating elements.

The Alters: Last Variable is precisely what a DLC should be, and I mean that as sincere praise and not just an empty compliment. It doesn't chase the "basically a sequel" trend other studios have been leaning into. It takes a loose thread from the base game's ending, builds a smaller, sharper story around it, and hands you back every mechanic you remember, whether you like them or not
Last Variable is a great expansion that improves on the original design. Terraforming and the new processing chain changes will give returning players new systems to play with and master. The cycles, Planetary Activity, and Field Lab research and aging mechanics add additional high-stakes considerations to an already-dynamic system. While some mechanics can feel a bit repetitive or even too complicated at first glance, they don’t feel undercooked. This is not a game or DLC to rush through, so I can understand if it doesn’t appeal to everyone.
While it lacks the greater variety of Jans, 11 bit have packed so much new stuff into The Alters: The Last Variable that it feels like a sequel.
A fantastic game gets that much better. A heartfelt, brilliantly written DLC touches on the cost of progress vs. our own sense of humanity.
The Alters: Last Variable expands the original game in exactly the way a great DLC should. Rather than simply adding more content, it introduces meaningful mechanics that reshape how you approach exploration, base building, and resource management without losing the identity of the original game. Jan the Scientist proves to be an excellent protagonist, the terraforming system fundamentally changes long-term planning, and the new research mechanics keep progression engaging throughout. If you enjoyed The Alters, Last Variable is an easy recommendation and the perfect reason to return to one of the best survival strategy games in recent years.
