Though much too easy, Dead Rising 4 is sandboxy zombie-killing adventure that recaptures the series' fun.

Dead Rising 4 evokes much of the same style and quirkiness that the first two games did, but ultimately isn’t able to spread that fun across the entire experience.

Dead Rising 4 is a fun, easy to pick up game which can bring you some Christmas joy and laughs, but stops short of offering anything amazing to the series.

Dead Rising 4 is filled with over-the-top, creative zombie killing, but the story is formulaic and the open world doesn’t invite exploration.

Despite a few improvements, Dead Rising 4 falls short in too many areas to earn a recommendation. A passable entry in the zombie slaying franchise that wastes the return of its original hero.

Dead Rising 4 marks the return of the fan-favorite protagonist Frank West and the setting in which he debuted, but there are shortcomings scattered about the chaotic landscape.

Photographer / zombie genocider Frank West is back for more utterly absurd and hilarious undead slaying in a gigantic game world.

Dead Rising 4 is an outstanding iteration: the sense of humor, the blood and Frank West make a comeback and give the series a much needed breath of fresh air. If you are a veteran of the franchise, you may dislike some of the changes at first, but as you play it you will appreciate the irreverence that the series is known for.

While the return of Frank West and the added exploration potential are good, and will likely keep you interested for the game's full duration, it's not enough to make Dead Rising 4 a satisfying experience. The real issue is that, even if you've never played a Dead Rising game, you've seen this all before.

While I found myself frustrated at points few and far between, I enjoyed my time with Dead Rising 4. It’s a charming, fun romp through a zombie wasteland who sets itself apart from other zombie stories with a sense of humor while still paying homage to those that came before it. If you’re looking for a merry time this holiday season, don’t be caught dead not checking out this Christmas slay ride, as Frank West would probably say.

It's fitting, somehow, that a game series so lovingly modeled after a famous B-movie would itself result in a B-tier game. Dead Rising 4 is uneven and less polished than many other games this fall. It's the kind of light, airy game I would have expected earlier in the year, when it wouldn't risk being swallowed up by the holiday season. At its core it's a pulp adventure, with winking witticisms and bloody messes strewn throughout. That makes it, if not entirely memorable, at least a bloody good time that understands the ephemeral nature of camp.

Dead Rising 4 is a good game. It's not great, and it's not bad—it's just good. Killing zombies is fun, the story isn't bad, and Frank is fun to play as with his sense of humor and "smart-ass but slightly aging journalist" schtick. It's just a bit too easy to really suck you into the gameplay, and the multiplayer is forgettable at best. You'll either love it for Frank's character and killing zombies with new toys, or you'll hate it for getting rid of your favorite features. Either way, it's an important entry in the series for Capcom Vancouver to learn what works and what doesn't.

In the end, Dead Rising 4 is a solid game that is an enjoyable experience for series fans and newcomers. The "use anything, make anything" mechanics that have made zombie-smashing so fun are still intact, and some changes only amplify the experience when dealing with the expansive world. While the story is good on its own, Frank's presence provides a nice balance between silly and serious, and the multiplayer also finds a sweet spot. The title has some issues, but they aren't enough to dampen the sheer fun this game provides. DR4 is a worthy pick-up this holiday season.

Although the weapons and the exo-suit elevate the core action of Dead Rising 4, the lack of timer takes away the challenge and the replayability. The currrent build also has a lot of bugs, unfortunately.
