If you’re a fan of the Ys series, this one’s a must have to get to know the past of the first initial game that started all this. There are many questionable elements which may serve as an obstacle for some of the modern gamers so you would have to be a true fan of the game as well as having the heart to play classic retro games to be able to endure most of them. At least with its affordable pricing, it’s not a bad game to play on the go.

Hopefully a patch will come down that will add at least an instruction on switching skills and fix the sound issues. Ys Origin isn't a great game, even with the various modes, difficulty settings, and characters that unlock for replayability, simply because it's straight dungeon crawl with little variety. However, these issues prevent Ys Origin from being as good as it could be, and they certainly make it difficult to recommend the title to newcomers of Ys.

As a long-time fan of action RPGs from the Secret of Mana to the infamous Diablo I must admit that if the combat is compelling I'm game for consistent action over turn-based strategy...

Though the game has some flaws and is starting to show its age, the fast paced combat system and compelling trifecta of stories mean Origin remains a strong title in the Ys series.

There are a lot of things to enjoy about Ys Origin, but it’s held back from reaching true greatness because of its ridiculous difficulty spikes and its story that requires three playthroughs to fully take in.

Ys Origin is a great gateway into the Ys series, as well as another high-quality entry for those who are already sold on the series.

Despite its age, Ys Origin is a solid dungeon-crawling RPG adventure to rival the best of current gen games.

While things can feel monotonous in places, Ys Origin is a fun ride, and a great introduction to the series for newcomers. Existing fans are sure to enjoy the additional story, though - it's one that only adds to an already rich mythology. Feeling like a fresh escape from the hand-holding that's found in many RPGs these days, Ys Origin is also a welcome challenge that's sure to please those looking to test their skills.

If you don't mind the game's port-related problems and weird changes, there's a chance that you could still have a good time with hacking your way through its enemies and bosses – especially if you're down with turning your Sony systems into your Ys machines. If anything, it's important for one to see if they can put up with DotEmu's work before they accept their mission to find the twin Goddesses.

Ys Origin gives us a chance to experience the prologue of the series. As a re-release, it doesn't really offer new content and unfortunately isn't a flawless conversion either.

Ys Origin is a good throwback to a time when action RPG were much simpler than they are today, but also a reminder that simple gameplay can be enjoyable and fun even ten or more hours later. The only downsides are a short length and a lack of variety, but this is nonetheless recommended to Adol Christin fans.

Despite being more than eleven years old, Y’s Origin still provides a fast arcade-fighting system, exciting boss-fights and a huge challenge for achievement-hunter. The old graphics may not meet everyones flavour, but with it’s nostalgic charme, they still manage to win peoples hearts. In short, Y’s Origin is a typical JRPG, that successfully reminisce us about videogames like Terranigma or Zelda: A Link to the Past and the beautiful 16/32-bit era.

Ys Origin embraces the old-school style of RPGs and mixes it up with quick-paced action-packed battling, and it makes for a surprisingly intuitive and very enjoyable experience. I had a lot of fun fighting my way through Devil’s Tower as all three characters and each adventure managed to feel unique in its own little way. The only real problem with the game is that it takes the ‘old-school’ approach too literally at times, with some features of the game a little too simplified and the saving system a little unforgiving. The game shows its age at times visually too, especially with some of the bland environments you explore. Still, none of these flaws stop Ys Origin from being a great action-RPG experience and one that fans of the genre will want to check out – regardless of whether or not it’s their first time with the Ys series.

Ys Origin is an engrossing dungeon crawler with a killer soundtrack that can serve as a great introduction to Ys series, or a rewarding prequel for longtime fans who missed out on previous releases. Any Switch owner looking to sink into an action RPG would do well to gives Ys Origin their attention.

GREAT - Challenging from the start, two characters to choose from, and music that brings the entire package together into an excellent RPG experience. Ys Origin does have its share of little annoyances, like equipping items and repetitive backdrops, but the positives outweigh the negatives enough to call this a solid and enjoyable foray into the world of Ys.

Seriously, what downsides it does have are either due to its age or just the fact that the designers prioritized a fun dungeon crawl over character building. That’s fine. The game you have here is a fine, crisp, energetic dungeon crawl that’s good to pick up and play and rewards you with bosses that are tough enough to matter but not so hard that you’ll want to throw the game in the garbage.

I’ve said it already, and I’ll say it again; Ys Origin is an incredibly refreshing game. Featuring characters with incredibly diverse playstyles, simple-yet-challenging combat, and an unmistakably large amount of that tried-and-true Nihon Falcom polish, Ys Origin is not only a celebration of Ys, but of action RPGs as well.
