On the surface, “Snake Pass” by Sumo Digital doesn’t appear to be an engaging and substantial puzzler. But after 15 levels of tense and strategic slithering and climbing, I have come to decide that not every good indie needs a thorough lore-filled story to keep a gamer’s interest and establish itself as one of the best experiences of this console generation.
Snakepass is a game that we can recommend to anyone looking for a unique 3D platforming puzzle experience, who enjoys experimenting with new control schemes.
Most restrictions of progress require confidence in your serpentine instincts, but it must be balanced with an understanding of your entire body in relation to gravity.
Snake Pass is both a visual delight and a challenging platformer from Sumo Digital. The controls are unique and take time to learn the intricacies of moving a digital snake around as if it were real. Snake Pass is an extraordinarily fun experience that is reminiscent of classic platformers from the past, but still fresh and unique to play through, especially for those with a hankering for physics puzzles.
Snake Pass sets out to bring a familiar feeling with a unique twist that sets it apart from its predecessors. While it does exactly that, it isn’t without fault, as overcoming the challenge of platforming without a jump might scare off the faint of heart. If you can overcome the early struggles and the occasional moments of frustration, the game offers a beautiful world to explore and plenty of collectables to keep you busy.
You'd think a game set around playing as a snake wouldn't have a leg to stand on, and yet this simple puzzler about a snake on a plane has no ereptile dysfunctions. Sorry, sorry… Snake Pass is a truly enjoyable, addictive and original platforming puzzler gem that really stands out. The only real issue is how short it feels. There are four worlds to complete, with fifteen stages in all, and an unlockable time-trial mode, but even with all that, there is a desire for more.
Sumo Digital have done an outstanding job with Snake Pass on PS4. Sure, the controls require a bit of trial and error before you get used to them, but they’re not a deal-breaker. There’s also an option for an easier control scheme if you feel that you need it, so be sure to give that a try. Complementing the action and the great looking scenery is an outstanding soundtrack by the wonderful David Wise which perfectly complements what the game has to offer. I highly recommend that you get Snake Pass on PS4, especially if you have a PS4 Pro so that you can take advantage of the bump in resolution and graphics!
The lack of stages isn't as big a deal as it sounds, as there is a lot of challenge to be had when it comes to picking up every collectible and mastering Noodle's snakey abilities. Expect a slow-paced puzzle-platformer, but one with a carefully crafted control scheme with levels that take full advantage of this unique set of skills. It won't appeal to everyone, and there will be a lot of frustration involved, but anyone with a penchant for Rare's old N64 hits would do well to check this out.
It's natural and rewarding in itself, so the collectibles are merely the icing on the cake. Anyone seeking a different take on the platforming genre would do very well to check this game out.

Snake Pass might look like a platformer made for kids but it has surprising deep mechanics and requires a lot of skill in order to complete every level while finding every collectible.
I liked playing Snake Pass, and this is definitively a one-of-a-kind experience. The difficulty curve is steep at first, but it has more to do with having to really think outside the box as you take on this platformer. Some of you might not like the game, but those of you who give it a chance and persevere will get to enjoy a very clever release.
Snake Pass is not for everybody. Fans of collectathons and colorful worlds will find much to like, but those looking for something a bit more fast paced might be turned off by Noodle and Doodle’s antics.
Snake Pass is a charming and distinctly different game, which mostly works in its favor. You won't find the platformer-without-jumping mechanics in any other game on the market. The downside is that the gameplay mechanic can quickly go from fun to frustrating. It's a game with a ton of personality, and those with the patience to work around its flaws will find a lot to like.
