What Remains of Edith Finch is a good game, but it fails to arrive at a satisfying conclusion, or build on its gameplay and narrative themes in any satisfying way. Thus, it never elevates itself to be something more than a series of interesting distractions, tied to a mystery that never resolves itself.
Given its wide scope, it's understandable that it's also a game that succeeds more in concept than execution. Like the subjects of the multi-generational novels whose tradition it embraces, Edith Finch's individual successes and failures are less important than its overall effect. It's a story made of stories, and the results of its breadth seem more important than the fine details.
For those who can't stand the "walking simulator" genre, Edith Finch likely won't change your mind. But Edith Finch does incredibly interesting things for fans of these kinds of experiences. Telling stories from different perspectives throughout time allows it experiment with different types of gameplay in different settings. At two hours it may be a bit short, but ultimately I was satisfied with its conclusion.

What Remains of Edith Finch is filled with excellent writing, striking visuals, and a significant sense of place, of people, of life's ephemeral nature and our relationship to it. And I do hope you'll play. When you're done, and while we're privileged enough to still be here, we can talk about how strange, fleeting, and frustratingly beautiful existence really is. There will be cheese, there will be wine and there will be the unfathomable reality of our own bright-but-brief short stories.
Don't question it — just buy it. Buy it right now. It isn't a shooter, and there are no puzzles and some will question if this even qualifies as a “game,” but What Remains of Edith Finch is an exemplar in video game narrative design. No other game I've ever played has provoked the same meditation on death, and ultimately life and the beauty of it all.
