Tarsier Studios' new puzzle/platformer uses dark whimsy and a sympathetic protagonist to make us ponder the consequences of modern excess

Little Nightmares is the finest tidbit of creepiness you’re likely to have this year. It does many things right: it’s dark and unsettling, the gameplay is varied enough to keep players interested, and the style and presentation gives it a character all its own.

When talking about gameplay, it's impossible not to compare Little Nightmares to Limbo or Inside. Although similar in that, this platform and horror game from Tarsier Studios delivers an unique atmosphere, inhabited by creatures that cause some discomfort (which is something good in this context, by the way). Its polished design, allied to a functional and intelligent gameplay, make the game an excellent choice to any gamer that might want a macabre and unconventional experience.

Transient, vague, and awash with macabre sights and sounds, Little Nightmares is aptly named. Its gameplay is rote and minimal but its skew of images will stick in your craw like the fleeting fragments of a nightmare upon waking. The rest will fade.

The fantastic tale of Six and her surreal adventure through the uncanny valley is one that will not be forgotten, especially after the startling character development of Six and the haunting ending. The artwork of this game is assuredly one of my all-time favourites, challenging the horror genre to step away from excessive gore and lazy jumpscares.

Little Nightmares won't rock your world but it breathes new life into both side-scroller platformers and horror games.

Little Nightmares goes for about $19.99 (digital) and for that much the game is pretty much worth it. Once the game begins, it is easy to be hooked and enthralled all the way to its conclusion. From an artistic and design standpoint, it is one of the most creative looking games around, and pulls off the whole demented doll house look perfectly. On Xbox One it may not be the smoothest running game, but it is still perfectly playable. Not a long or challenging game by any means, but Little Nightmares does manage to make a lasting impression.

Little Nightmares is an evocative and very creative game. It's clear that developer Tarsier was invested in making this not only a game but an experience. It explores themes of childhood and some of our deeper fears, although it's lack of story context does leave it a bit more abstract than it needs to be. The gameplay of the puzzles are well designed and escaping to the next is a harrowing and rewarding experience. Although it's short, the experience is tense and meaningful. There is enough to ponder here philosophically to merit a look. If unsettling yourself for a few hours is your thing, there are much worse ways to spend $20.

Setting aside its short length and awkward controls, Little Nightmares is a brilliant and memorable game that that deserves to be played by horror and platformer fans.

Little Nightmares feels like a delicious food which leaves a very great taste in your mouth. The only problem of this game is that it’s really short. Little Nightmares is definitely inspired by games like Inside but it has its very own feeling and is one of the best dark platformer games of this generation.

Little Nightmares is an effective little thriller that provides a breezy four or so hours of gameplay and some of the most intense scares of the year, high praise in a year where Resident Evil VII and Outlast II have also released. This short length might be a bone of contention for some but it ensures that the game is succinct and free from filler and doesn't run the risk of wearing out its welcome.

It might not be the most refined experience (something young Burton's films were often guilty of as well), but that vision, and the rare mastery over a horror many of us feel but struggle to articulate, makes this game frequently surprising, intense, and always sublime.
